Hey guys,

Sorry for the length, hopefully someone actually bothers to read my wall of text.

I'm currently on an ADSL2+ connection with a Linksys WAG160N modem, I have checked all my filters and had an isolation test done, everything seemed normal from my ISP's point of view.

The Problem

The modem works flawlessly when 4 wired connections are active, we can stream/download/game and the modem never crashes. However, when someone uses WiFi everything goes down hill. The wired connections become slower, the modem itself starts giving up (can't even access modem settings) and then eventually crashes once download speeds go above 200-300kb/s (on the wireless) which means I have to force a restart.

TLDR: Modem dies with WiFi activity

I have tried changing channels, monitoring connection activity/security and firmware updates.. the problem still persists.

Question

Now, the modem itself (on the box) has a picture under "Wireless Activity" which indicates what the wireless is good for.. the pictures are highlighted all the way to "multiple computers" but the images for gaming, streaming music and streaming tv are shaded out.. this might sound insanely noobish (let's face it, I'm a network noob) does this mean it clearly says on the box, if you try to game/stream using WiFi you're gonna have a bad time?

Solution

Should I switch to VDSL (I'm on the edge of coverage according to my friend that works at Chorus) or should I purchase an expensive but powerful ADSL2+ Modem instead? (recommend one please, preferably with 4 ports for wired and strong WiFi)

Cheers, highly appreciate any feedback on this.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Sounds like that router is rubbish, get a new one.  Whether or not you go to VDSL is a seperate issue (but maybe you should do so and get a new router from the ISP at the same time!)

I was thinking that, but I've been told if you're at the edge you might experience problems?

btw, what are your opinions on this modem?

might be overkill but I'm not fussed to be honest

No experience with it personally, but it looks like a beast, and 5Ghz wireless is a good thing when there's so much interference in the 2.4Ghz band.

VDSL works great.  If you are too far from the exchange, they simply won't install it, so you're pretty safe there.  It will always be faster than an ADSL2+ connection, or they'll back it out.

This magnificent piece of hardware is an ASUS DSL-N55U wireless N600 modem router.
I use one - best router I've ever owned - worth every cent - excellent wireless performance.
The only catch is that it won't do VDSL :(

Fine by me to be honest, I've had this recommendation for a while now from multiple people.. might just grab it, stick with ADSL2+ for a while until vdsl or fibre becomes fully stabilized throughout NZ

No issues with VDSL and Fibre in this country.

We will provide a free Router/Modem on sign up and it kinda beats that Asus in most ways.

Cheers

No fibre available at my address yet, so maybe I'll wait for that + the prices to go down a bit... I'm on 500gb with a very stable adsl2+ connection (excluding the modem problems) so I'm quite happy.

cheers anyways.

highly unlikely the vdsl base price will be dropping. unless your waiting on data prices to drop.. no real reason not to jump ship atlest for a try atlest..

although its only a new product for the "big" isps, its been available for years and supplied by many for many years now.. to many respects because of the use of DLM, its more stable than adsl

I never had a spontaneous re sync on my ADSL never on my VDSL.

on a stable line you wont. consider an unstable line though, DLM will adjust accordingly rather than ADSL just disconnecting alot and everyone moaning that they are disconnecting..

added advantage of getting the splitter installed, possibly cleaning up the line too.

i wasnt saying ADSL is more unstable, but simply that it CAN be.

I know what you were saying :)

If your ADSL2+ is unstable we will give you some lovely ADSL1 that is more stable than a rock.

Hey guys, thought I'd update you on my progress.

I got the Asus N55U modem and it's amazing, works 10x better than my Linksys and has a way better browser-interface. The N55U has fixed the crash issues I had but I've noticed I'm starting to lag in video games when someone is using the wireless.

What are my options? is it possible to limit the wireless connections so they don't affect the wired ones?

edit: I've set Wireless to N mode only, apparently that's supposed to help? any other recommendations would be awesome, cheers.

Do you mean the gamers are on wired connections and they're seeing lag? I'd make sure that your connection isn't being maxed out. (Especially upstream, if you max out your upstream you'll see packet loss + higher latency).

If they're on wireless too, well, nothing you can really do about that, other than possibly switching to 5ghz.
