Hi.

A apartment building I have an ownership stake in in Whangamata has Line Stats of 14dB which puts them JUST outside the VDSL Zone, and to my knowledge no RBI nor UFB is intended or planned to cover that area.

I am wondering if there is a method by which to submit a request for consideration for Chorus (or someone else) to put another cabinet down this street (Covers about 180 houses).

The address is 410 Ocean Rd, Whangamata.

Anyone know if such a thing is possible ?

I personally doubt Chorus would further cabinetise in that area, unless you and everyone else were interested in funding it. There are so many places that don't even have decent ADSL1 speeds, so with you getting ADSL2 and on the cusp of VDSL at around 900 meters from the exchange you are doing pretty well.

Unfortunately it's not ADSL per apartment, 30 units share 1 :)

Was at a meeting with James (CEO of Inspire) a couple of weeks ago. He was complaining that he has been asking Chorus to build a cabinet that the residents were willing to pay for ($50k) and it was falling on deaf ears. Chorus dont appear to have any specific person you can talk to about such proposals. The buildout plans comes from government agreements and statisticians (monkeys with spreadsheets)

I've got a few contacts in Chorus. Some of the issues come from ownership of the equipment afterwards as it's a regulated product. As your monthly broadband would still cost the same. Any reason why you wouldn't put in your own hsns and dslam. Feel free email me as I can put them in touch with the designers.

So if there isn't a channel to pass this request thing (Seems strange) do I just contact Chorus on the 0800 and try my luck?

If you really wanted and had the gold in the banks to do so you can pay Chorus to further their network at your expense. Like sub dividers do.

Painful. Looking at this.
I cant say where but there is fibre running down your street. That appears to be able to provide a PTP connection or HSNS.

That's only $16/apartment wholesale. So you could sell to residents at $40/month. Gives a total profit of $720/month. Pays off $20k (Not sure what a private DSLAM would cost but wouldn't imagine it would be near 20k) in 28 months.

Why do 30 apartments share one connection? That location is fed from the exchange and is ADSL2+ capable. I don't actually see why you need a DSLAM. There is no reason why everybody in there can't have their own ADSL2+ connection.

If you were interested in a private solution where internet could be provided to individual apartments maybe even as a pay as you go solution over copper then PM me.

I would have thought the 24 port DSLAMs these days that do VDSL are sub 5k or so. So get a Point to Point Fibre for however much it costs to get installed into your building and then run a GPON / UFB circuit over it if Chorus will let you or a P2P / HSNS circuit and you would be done.

Sounds very expensive. I looked into P2P Fibre with 1TB of data last year and I think at the cheapest it was actually around $1200 a month. No way would I get sign off to go from spending $80 a month to $1200 a month.
