Hi,

I have a couple question about VDSL internet in the New Zealand, and was wonder if anyone be able to answer?

1: Can the speed be estimated from the line statistics before sign up to VDSL provided ISP?
2: Is it possible to get plan with cap taller then 500GB or is there a ISP with Unlimted plan with decent VDSL speeds for the International traffic

I am currently with the Telecom 500Gb  ADSL2 and the Data cap is too small, it uses 600 GB a month for me. I am considering changing to Orcon $199 Unlimited VDSL is this any a good Plan? As the fiber is not avalible to my house yet.

Thankyou

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

assuming you have a master filter already installed, can make a reasonable estimate from your current downstream attenuation.

otherwise, call your isp, ask for a "Prequal" to get the estimated VDSL speed for your connection (chorus prequal is likely to be lower than you will actually get too.)

if international traffic is your concern, ild really look elsewhere than an unlimited plan..

No, I don't have master splitter install, and does the master splitter be installed by Chorus when the VDSL install? And does there a ISP with a cap bigger then 500GB?

http://bigpipe.co.nz - I'm on it personally and love it! You do need somebody to install a master filter + provide a VDSL modem but it is an unlimited plan with no strings attached.

You can purchase a VDSL modem from Telecom's website here: http://www.telecom.co.nz/internet/modems/
Depending where you live you have some helpful Geekzoners that'll be happy to install a master filter for a small cost.

And you also go in the draw to win a new laptop with them: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=158&topicid=142498

yes.

Snap do 1TB plans, plus free offpeak. ild highly recommend looking at them. my international performance is excellent, i cant even begin to complain about it.. unlike many other providers.......

long as you go with a provider that isnt bigpipe, yes a splitter is included in a VDSL installation.

How about Orcon unlimted VDSL plan? How is their international speed during the off peak times?

when i was on orcon, nevermind VDSL, their ADSL performance was that of a dog turd.

to be fair though, that was a year or so ago, and when they were having real issues with their performance.

if your really concerned about international speeds, i wouldnt look at unlimited plans.

TimA: 500GB Caps, Vodafone, Telecom.
Over 500GB (Capped) Snap
Unlimited: Slingshot, Orcon, BigPipe

All of these ISPs arrange for Chorus to do a master filter install EXCEPT BigPipe ...
BigPipe is strictly no-frills - you have to buy your own modem and pay for your own master filter install, and VoIP is not included.

Don't even think about VDSL without a master filter smile
As a heavy user myself, I would recommend Snap 1TB or Orcon Unlimited.

IMPORTANT: What is your current downstream attenuation?

ADSL speed, and even more, VDSL speed, is largely determined by the quality and quantity of copper inside and outside your home -
The problem is with xDSL technology, and has less to do with your ISP.
I have used Orcon in 5 locations over a 6-year period, and have had average or above average ADSL speeds.

My downstream attenuation is 10db. Is that good value?

as i said, this was awhile back not, when orcon WERE having issues big enough to openly agree on GZ that they were.

when i was with them, my problems where within their network, not my DSL connection.

the point i made before still stands, you shouldnt go with an unlimited connection and expect the world. unlimited simply will be more congested than a limited plan, purely down to the economics of providing the connection.

boardline for VDSL, you will get about 25~35/8~10 most probably.

You have a good chance if getting a decent VDSL connection if your down attenuation is below 10.5.
Go for it smile

EDIT [I would consider 25~35/8~10 to be good]
