TrueNet has measured and reported on the Time of Day differences in speed for larger ISPs for over 3 years. The intent of this repetitive reporting is to create a competitive market for the benefit of users not only in the major ISPs, but also in minor ISPs by association.
ToD reporting is the only fair way we can report speeds for ADSL, because the best speed you can get is dependent on the distance between your modem and the DSLAM. However ISPs do and can impact the speed you receive during the evening busy period, especially if they always have sufficient capacity to enable free-flow of data.

TrueNet testing is compared with similar testing in the UK and USA. We would love to have done more countries - most of the EU uses similar methodology, but the data has not been published

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Interesting.

Of course, for people choosing an ISP historical data isn't especially useful. It doesn't matter to me what ISP X was like 3 years ago. I want to know what they are like now.
although having said that, historical may be an indicator of future performance.

Very interesting that all ISPs have seen major improvement over the last 3 years, despite a massive shift upwards in data usage.

It also shows that there is no material difference between any of these major ISPs (a few percent either way is pretty meaningless) so choosing your ISP based on speed is basically useless, since everyone is basically the same (according to your data at least)

That wouldn't be a bad thing, the whole point of True Net is to inform consumers of performance so that we can make the best decision when choosing an ISP. If unlimited plans suck then True Net shouldn't hide that.

Customer should advise truenet if they change. The percent of people that change down would be fairly small.

For Unlimited plans, we found that the differences with capped plan performances were minimal and we felt we were wasting our time and money on reporting them separately.

We plan to do some comparisons of BitTorrent-like downloads at some stage in the future to see the differences, but that would require some investment in development that we may struggle to get support for.

Volunteers are a great bunch of people, they offer support, data allowances and keep us informed in the main. Those who miss out on informing us of changes, always do that accidentally.

For speeds, we have a simple algorithm that detects the average upload speed over a few days and warns us of any change.

With unlimited plans we send out emails to potential volunteers on a regular basis if we need to report. We are unlikely to do that for a while.

i don't think comparing peak time to off peak performance is necessarily a good comparison.

in the past there has been slowness with downloading over http off-peak with some ISP's with transparent proxies that reduce maximum tcp/ip performance for file transfers. (it probably doesn't make much difference for web browsing)

if one isp gives 400kb/sec peak, and 600kb/sec off-peak, and another one gives 1200kb/sec peak, and 3200kb/sec off peak, it may be considered then the second one is obviously better, even if speeds vary. and speeds do vary normally on the internet. sometimes just cancelling and restarting a download can give a better download speed, as some systems alternate routes. (as well as this, tcp/ip can take a long time to recover from packet loss)

the other thing to look out for is US residential peak slow downs, this used to be a common problem with battle.net for instance.
