I don't think I could get more jealous.

EDIT: Isn't there already a thread on this?

Talking about Ultrafast 1Gig in general.

I've added this article to the Full Flavour forum as the article is specific to Tauranga and mentions our plan changes.

Hi Jesse,

Just interested in what sort of international capacity you think you'll need to start offering these Gigabit plans.

I would imagine that the retail cost of the gigabit plans would be significant based on the cost of international?

Yeah, I'd love to get a cost estimate for an unlimited gigabit plan in NZ. Not "TELL ME YOUR FUTURE PRICES NOW", but just a rough estimate and cost breakdown for curiosity sake.

EDIT: Reading that newspaper article, did you just say that the service will retail for $129?!

We're crunching the numbers at the moment.

One of the disadvantages of being a regional operator is we don't have 1Gbps of international capacity sitting unused during peak times so that users of a 1Gbps plan could spike to 1Gbps intermittently (for speedtests, linux ISOs, whatever).

Our international usage tends to be more consistent. The majority of the traffic during peak is YouTube & Netflix - so consistent streams.

Where we're thinking we'll see real performance from the 1Gbps option:

- Domestic (1Gbps into all peering exchanges in NZ)
- Caches operated inside Full Flavour's network
- Google Global Cache
- Sydney (Australasian CDN Point - Google, Microsoft, Highwinds, Edgecast, Amazon - the list goes on)

Our current goal is to start 1Gbps pricing from the $129 price point.

That will probably be with a small data cap.

I can't imagine why someone would get a capped 1gbps plan...

Thinking about it, I've never heard of a capped 1gbps plan anywhere in the world. Does anyone know of one?

Still seeing reasonable-priced 1gbps plans in the pipeline is very exciting! Go NZ internet!

Full Flavor is marketing to the stupid people. They will get a 1Gbps connection and then browse stuff and Facebook through wifi while claiming it's so much faster than the 100Mbps they had before.

I think you'd find our customer base are quite far from being described as "stupid people".

A huge chunk of our clientele are switched-on individuals running businesses from home and while they may not be regular Geekzoners, their knowledge and what they do online is a big step from ordinary.

I was involved in an install last night where the client had already organised a central area for his ONT, had cat6 cabled his place and was ready to patch his various devices around the home into the router.

I don't think solaybro was trying to say all FFM customers are idiots, but rather those who would get a gigabit connection with a datacap would be idiots. IMO I'd say ignorant, but anyway.

However, now that I think about it, FFM doesn't offer capped plans. Does this mean the $129 gigabit plan would be uncapped? That would be an amazing plan indeed, if supplied with decent backhaul.

I'm not saying all customers are stupid, just the ones that think a capped 1Gbps plan is worth it. If you can keep your internet usage really low and want to use wifi then 1Gbps is not for you, some people wont understand that.

Unlikely we'll ever do caps but unlike some of the other unlimited players we do have a fair use policy.

In the case of a very heavy user (1000GB + / month) it's likely we'll only guarantee a certain level of performance up to particular point, before said heavy user has their traffic dropped back in priority (affecting the experience during peak times).

I can't commit to anything yet - all is very fluid as we work out the details.

you need to be careful about that 'Fair Use' policy.

Orcon had to remove it from their unlimited plan under threat of the comcom, and no other ISP has it.

That suggests to me that having a fair use policy on an unlimited plan probably breaches the fair trading act.

You might be small enough to slip under the comcom's radar for now, but not for ever....
