Hi There,

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post but it looked to be the only general forum for internet services.

We've had some weird Vodafone experiences recently and Orcon require us to sort a new VIOP alarm system before they'll allow fibre - so we're looking for alternatives.

Does anyone have first hand experience with some good providers - we're looking for a 100 down/50 up service in the region of 200GB-400GB per month.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

you can get an alarm server device that links your old alarm to a VOIP modem

You can wire your house's internal phone wiring up to the VoIP router your ISP provides. We did this and the alarm works fine.

Thanks for the info but it's been made clear to us that if our connection goes down, we won't have any alarm monitoring.

So far in 16 years, our analogue phone lines have never actually gone down (fingers crossed).

But based on your replies, are you all recommending Orcon (we're currently with Vodafone)?

Telecom's UFB service keeps the phoneline intact and in service to carry on using your existing alarm system.

im saying you dont have to discount orcon, there are ways around what they are saying

you can get a 3g backup for your modem so your alarm is still monitored if the power goes out, or you could get a small power brick for your ONT, Modem and any alarm hardware (alarm already has a power brick in it )

thats what my parents have in their house

I've found Telecom have been fine, only just put in order for UFB so experience based on ADSL.

The 100/50 plan is $139 for unlimited (with traffic management), there is still a 500GB plan available (no traffic management) but is not advertised on the main site:

Does your business need internet access to operate? If so then leave the landline connected (probally with Telecom), have ADSL or VDSL on it as well as your alarm. And then Get naked fibre as your main internet connection with a different ISP.

You will probably want a business fibre plan. If consumers ones with unlimited are used for business it could get picked up etc and its a void of the terms and conditions blah blah blah.

If its a home location and you work from home sure get a consumer plan but if you got staff ETC then business.
Being a VF employee i would suggest them. Offshore speeds are very good on fibre and routing is good. Cheapest for what it is.

TBH your missing the point ehre. You need to change your alarm to either be IP based or maybe GSM based. AlarmNZ do modules and monitoring services too.

As the future progresses even Telecomw ill probably stop providing copper lines so you have to make the shift, may aswell be now. IP modules can be retrofitted to alarms.
