Hi All,

Thinking about buying and moving into a property in old Papatoetoe Auckland. Noticing every house we consider, the entire street is overhead lines. The lines themselves look really ratty and miserable looking. Every time we view a property I look up at the lines and swear I see either a pair of sneakers from 1972 or other miscellaneous material draped over the line.

Anyone living in the area (or know someone etc) can give me an indication of what to expect if I want VDSL or ADSL2 ? General comments, speed tests, complaints from Aunty Agnus - I'll take anything at this point. I know its not that scientific, but its better than knowing nothing. The real estate agents are very unhelpful with my weird broadband question.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

You need to be more specific than just "Papatoetoe" as it would be different in every street...but this should give you an idea or get you started:

For example, some parts of my suburb have fibre and VDSL2, while the rest can get ADSL2 and nothing else.

Will also depend on the quality of the house wiring if connected to copper

Live near Papatoetoe West/South... Some nice VDSL near there with fibre around the corner too...

'West' does sound promising but you may still be in a slightly newer area. Do you have those crusty old overhead lines in your area?

Chorus coverage maps are your best source of accurate data. If you wanted a specific address you could also ask your ISP to do a prequal.

Nah sadly I don't have the overhead lines but I still think I see some occasionally around the area.

There wasn't any easy way to include or write off an entire suburb due to the huge variances. I think I was just a little shocked at seeing all those old overhead sad looking lines and became a little fixated on it.

I just added an extra column to the house spreadsheet and now do a Chorus search on each property and make it another condition to consider.

Your view of "sad" looking overhead lines means very little. All that matters is what the Chorus network says you will get.

We are the other side of the tracks in Mangere East, but I know they put fibre in ( on the street one over from mine naturally). If you are near Middlemore hospital, it was of course all wired up.
