Hi,

Wanting to know what sort of speeds I could expect with Woosh Wireless. I'm in an apartment building in Newmarket currently getting 8mbit, which is quite a bit of a step-down from 100mbit fibre at my old home.

Is there any wireless options avaliable in Newmarket which would give me better speeds, particular interested in higher upload speeds also.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Do you happen to be in Queens Lodge or Kings Square? If so (having lived there before) I found that the connectivity there is pretty crap for wired options.

I had Woosh many years ago and (back then) it wasn't even comparable to DSL, and I dont think it has changed.

not with the woosh wireless service, its pretty painful, I had it 2 years ago and even then its support was very limited and the service much like dial up.
I'm 100m away from one of their towers, clean line of sight.

Yeah, I'm in Queens Lodge. When I moved in, the Chorus map had said I was in VDSL coverage. When signing up with a provider, I could barely get 8mbit in ADSL. Talking to the Chorus tech who came to my apartment, and he said that the entire apartment wasn't cabinetised, and was run back to the Auckland Central exchange (which is a decent distance). The chorus map must have had a mistake, because apparently the rest of the area is cabinetised.

Is it likely that Chorus will cabinetise an apartment building?

The other option I saw, is that wireless nation offer Cable over Fibre, (i.e. terminate fibre in the comms room of the apartment, and then VDSL up to each apartment unit). That would be a good alternative, but need to see if there is any more interest from other tenants.

Been there done that, over a year ago now. The apartments are connected to the exchange in Remuera, and the cable runs down Remuera Road, along Broadway (towards Parnell) then loops back and comes into the building near the entrance to the square on Broadway.  I tried getting VDSL but had worse speeds than on ADSL. It took over a month to diagnose all this and get back into VDSL, and took 3 different Chorus techs.

If you look at the Chorus maps you will see the whole of Newmarket is UFB, except for the apartments.  I think (personal opinion) that with so many apartments that L&Y have NO interest in upgrading the block.  Which is dumb as all apartments have CAT5 back to the main patch area.  I have heard many stories of L&H Holdings and their reluctance to spend any money (at one time the carpark barriers broke down every single weekend and people would just push them up as there was no-one on site to fix them) so Fibre and VDSL wouldn't be high on their list.

However Newmarket gets really good 4G signals, what about that as an option?

If you went on Woosh wireless you'd be lucky to get a quarter of the speed you're getting now.

Yeah, some saving luck might be that Chorus is saying that UFB is planned for December 2014, however having been through the UFB consent process for just an attached townhouse, I can imagine it would be a nightmare for apartments.

4G, yeah... I get 50mbit on Telecom... too bad the data plans are so expensive.
