From Citylink:

APE brings the World Closer to New Zealand with CloudFlare

CloudFlare, the Internet performance and security company, has partnered with the Auckland Peering Exchange (APE).

APE, operated by CityLink, is the largest Peering Exchange in New Zealand with more than 80 ISPs, leading Content Delivery Networks (CDN), media networks and education networks. In the coming weeks it will be connected to international content distributed by CloudFlare, now local to New Zealand and transit-free.

CloudFlare operates out of 28 data centers in 20 countries around the world and automatically caches your static files at edge nodes so a website loads twice as fast for the user.

When a CDN connects to a Peering Exchange, all the ISPs and other clients in the Peering Exchange can exchange traffic directly with the CDN, resulting in substantial savings on transit costs for both the Peering Exchange participants and the CDN.

“CloudFlare is of tremendous value to our clients of APE. It will enhance the Internet experience for APE customers in New Zealand and save substantial costs too,” said Nick Willis, Chief Executive of CityLink which runs the New Zealand Internet Exchange (NZIX) of which APE is a part. “At NZIX, we are constantly growing our peering relationships and building value added solutions for our customers.”

“The Auckland Peering Exchange is the natural choice for a peering partner in Southeast Asia,” said Matthew Prince, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at CloudFlare. “This partnership enables us to easily reach the bulk of New Zealand service providers and their users, delivering content closer to the user and enhancing performance.”

From discussion on NZNOG it will be colocated at our friends The Datacentre in Auckland.

"The Cloud" will never take off. This is dumb.

Awesome, my ping will go from originally 200ms to the US server, down to 35ms in Sydney a while back, soon to 5ms in Auckland. I've set up page cache rules to tell it to cache html as well as all static resources, so my entire site will be served locally most of the time :)

I assume muppet is being sarcastic? Cloudflare being a CDN, not a "cloud" in the normal sense of the word. Though of course the original meaning of a scalable elastic pool of computing and storage has been taken over by marketers, especially bad now WD is calling a hard drive a "personal cloud".

Very cool, and a great move for Cloudflare. Will help cement their footing in SME CDN space in New Zealand. I personally have been reluctant to put any New Zealand hosted websites through Cloudflare because it seems stupid for clients to fetch from Australia. Our webhost peers at APE so we should get all of the benefits of Cloudflare with virtually no downside.

EDIT: Of course when I say 'stupid', there are plenty of valid reasons to do it currently - just not for the sites I look after :)

From Australia? If you are on Vodafone Blue (TelstraClear cable) then it actually gets into Sydney but because they don't peer there it continues all the way to Singapore. That's why Snap DSL at 10Mbps is faster to load Geekzone than Vodafone cable 100Mbps.

Let's hope Vodafone and Telecom (the big two) actually comes to the party and peer with them... Nothing firm yet but I hear noises.

Great news, this brings the number of CDNs with local PoPs to 3 (Cloudflare, Fastly and Akamai). Good to see CDNs investing money in our little group of islands.

OnApp based CDNs also have (or can have) NZ nodes.

From my recent survey the no-minimum-commit pay-per-GB CDNs with NZ nodes are

* CDN.net (OnApp) plus other OnApp resellers like CDNsun.
* xcdn.exceda.com (Akamai reseller)

Currently I'm using XCDN because, well, akamai.

Great for all of you but as a user Cloudflare is just a pain for me. The main evidence of it I ever see is endless CAPTCHA demands every time I try to browse a web site with Tor. It is so bad now I have to use a web proxy to bypass the nonsense. Which raises the point that if it is so easy to bypass, why impose this on users in the first place? I use Tor, by the way, because I value what is left of my privacy when browsing other than a handful of trusted sites.

I suspect use of TOR for privacy is small compared to the use of TOR for spam/scam. Unfortunately it's your loss.

The anonymity tor adds is a great and a bad thing at the same time!

I personally dont have an issue with tor, i look after a pretty decent sized tor exit.

The problem i have is the way tor is used by many, This is to the degree that a few gaming communities I am in blacklist tor exits from their site.

if Freitasm was to bump the cloudflare security checks up, from current experience over multiple sites, i can guarantee there will be moaning about the 'constant spinning circle' issue coming from spark users..

As above, I can confirm that Vodafone cable customers (ex-TCL) now have access to Cloudflare Sydney instead of Cloudflare Singapore thanks to peering. This is a welcome move by Vodafone, reducing latency to Cloudflare-enabled sites (including Geekzone) from 150ms to 35ms.

This is obviously going to get even better when the Auckland POP opens.

The NZ POP seems to be live now... 11ms from Snap fibre to Cloudflare, that should help a few of my websites speed up a bit :) Should help GZ too.
