Release today, 2013 Census QuickStats Transport and Comms is availabe in PDF and Excel tables. From their release:


Three out of every four households at the 2013 Census had Internet access, an increase of 34 percent since 2006, according to census results released by Statistics New Zealand today.

The Queenstown-Lakes district has the highest proportion of households with access to the Internet, at 88 percent. The Wairoa district has the lowest proportion, at 55 percent.

“Around 95 percent of households earning over $100,000 have access to the Internet, while 45 percent of households earning $20,000 or less had access,” Census Customer Focus Manager Gareth Meech said.

The proportion of households with access to a cellphone continues to rise, and is now 84 percent – up almost 10 percent since 2006. Conversely, households with access to a landline telephone has dropped to 86 percent, down 6 percent since 2006.

2013 Census QuickStats about transport and communications has information on household access to telecommunication systems and motor vehicles. It also includes information about how people travelled to work on census day.

Households in New Zealand most commonly have access to two motor vehicles, at 38 percent. Households with one motor vehicle continue to be less common. The proportion of households with three or more motor vehicles continues to increase, and is now at 16 percent.

The Tasman region has the highest percentage of households with more than one motor vehicle (96 percent). Wellington has the highest percentage of households with no access to motor vehicles (12 percent).

“On census day, 50 percent of employed adults drove to work in a private vehicle, and this continues to be the most common way of travelling to work. We will release more data on this topic in March,” Mr Meech said.

Other key points from the release include:

 

  • Almost 1 in 10 people worked at home on census day.
  • 1 in 6 people travelling to work by public bus on census day were aged 20–24 years old.
  • One-parent households are the most likely to have no access to a motor vehicle.
  • Just over half of one-person households have access to the Internet – up from a third in 2006.

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

No, thanks... FTA:

"More than half (57 per cent) of those surveyed said they experienced problems with disconnections and dropouts, with 15 per cent saying that happened regularly."

This is more likely to be either internal wiring, users connecting via WiFi in the middle of a congested area or a Chorus problem, not an ISP problem but hey, these customers won't know the difference.
