As the title says, I live in Birkdale in Auckland (North Shore). Adsl2 is available at my address (approximately 14mb down/800k up but I would really like at least vdsl2 speeds). There are currently no other services available at my address, UFB will be available in 2017/2018. I can't get vdsl2 as I am too far from the exchange and there is no way of getting retail wireless due to the topography. I have investigated the following:

Multilink-PPP – found an ISP who did this but due to problems with Chorus assigning ports, I could never get this working for more than a minute (approx. 30mb download speeds using two adsl2 lines when it did)
Purchasing a wireless backhaul type solution directly to my home - and no-one ever gets back to me
Asking Chorus to install an inline vdsl2 repeater (yeah right)
Very tall pole for wireless
Running a fibre connection to my address - $16,000 as Vector run past the end of the street
Down on my knees begging – got me nowhere

Can anyone else suggest any other options? I am willing to pay for the extra kit but $16,000 was a little beyond the budget. I may consider my first born though

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

Hurry up and wait seems to be the only option. That or moving house.

Not really a blackspot. Many are in the same situation (myself included) and ADSL2+ ain't bad. Thank your stars you are not on a Conklin.

I'm nearby in sunny Beach Haven. There's a Chorus cabinet about 600m from my house, I guess the line runs pretty much straight to my door because my VDSL2 service is a consistent 36Mbps down and a rock solid 10Mbps up.

There's an exchange at the top of Birkdale Road and I know there are cabinets scattered around the suburb. There's even some fibre. Going by the Chorus map I'd say about 30 percent of the suburb is already on UFB and another 15 percent or so will follow next year. Looking closely at the map, there are not many areas that are more than 600-700m from a cabinet.

What happens if you try to sign up for VDSL2 with Spark? Do you get the "not at this address" message?

bingo - "not at this address". I don't know where the cabinets are but they are nowhere near Salisbury Road which is where I am.

You are in that range where the exchange gives you "enough" so you dont get a cabinet. I was stuck on 4-5 till the cabinet went in, because of distance Im not much better than you are for downstream with VDSL here. 2018 for fiber. Yay.

I was even hoping there might be an industrious individual who has UFB out there, who might consider setting up a wireless link from their premises to my home, at my cost of course. Believe me I have thought there might be an opportunity to set up a little Wireless ISP in this area.

BTW, I have a friend on Kia Ora Rd(?) in the same boat as you - ADSL only, no VDSL, no fibre for a few years yet. He has two ADSL lines.

I've been in the same boat as you almost for a flat I've lived in for the past 2 years, Ellerslie off the exchange, 8mbit on Chorus wholesale, 10mbit off Vodafones DSLAM with profiles tweaked.
Too far out from the exchange for VDSL, Too close to the exchange to be cabinetised. No UFB until 2018

Luckily I move out on Friday to a place where the Cabinet is 300m down the road so hopefully I get good VDSL speeds :D

I also tried two lines into my home using MLPPP but Chorus would not help out with the ports at the exchange to ensure that the aggregated lines were stable, so it would fail after a few minutes. This is how I know that I could get close to 30meg download using two lines but it just wasn't stable and Chorus wouldn't help because it was with another ISP even though they didn't support MultiLink PPP.

Possibly not, unfortunantly I'm not going to get fibre until 2017-2018

Funny thing is, half of Rangatira Road (the Beach Haven end) can get fibre, the rest can't.
