Currently with Full Flavour on a 50/20Mbps service. I do a lot of remote work to the USA via VPNs and need as fast a service as possible. I'm considering upgrading to FF's 100/100Mbps service, but wanted to know if anyone else out there has a UFB service and what speeds they're getting.

Current stats are:
Tauranga, NZ to Raleigh, NC (USA)
Tauranga (NZ) to NC (USA)

Are there better UFB / ISP performers to the USA? And what carrier do they use?

Since these speeds are no where near the 50/20Mbps (or close to) I get to Auckland and local exchange, I'm wondering if it's even worth upgrading or whether I should be switching providers? Considering I get these rated speeds locally, there's nothing wrong with the wiring or modem / fibre connection, and is pure latency / congestion related to overseas.

-----------------

Interestingly, the speeds across to Australia have decreased over the last 12 months - possibly as more data is being transferred across the ditch. Historical figures show:

  • 18 April, 2014 - Ping: 44ms, Download: 28.22Mb/s, Upload: 19.30Mb/s

  • 12 March, 2015 - Ping: 51ms, Download: 9.6Mb/s, Upload: 19.4Mb/s

Tauranga, NZ to Melbourne, Vic (AUS)
Tauranga, NZ to Melbourne, Vic (AUS)

Thank you.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Wow - download speed is certainly much higher. Interesting that the upload speed doesn't improve. Nice ping result too (almost 20% better result). Any 50/20Mbps SNAP user's out there... SNAP seems to be in front at this stage!

EDIT: Couldn't find a 100/50 service on their website. Found 100/20 and 200/20...

Thank you for the replies so far.

Your ISP pretty much has no control over speeds once a connection enters the US. I'd br surprised if you see any significant variances to that speedtest server between ISPs.

Due to the poor state of broadband and connectivity inside the US it's not uncommon to see poor speeds to many areas, and good speeds to others - even testing between providers on the West Coast will deliver some very significant speed differences.

Something I forgot to include the speed test server that was chosen is kinda below par.
Just for reference it's been stuck at this for a good solid 50 seconds which indicates a bad server before it actually completed(it was stuck at that exact point before completion)

Let's just say North Carolina has some of the worst speedtest servers and this may skew around some results.

Example.

I wish that there was something much better we could test.

Something definitely up with Full Flavour's 50/20 Mbps service through to the US (or at least the networks they are using):
Tauranga NZ to Raleigh NC (USA)

Literally minutes after the last test (above).

by a long shot whats your tracert to this?

192.223.31.234

i feel like you're better off diagnosing what your problem is rather then switching from FF

Here are some tests on Snap 200/200 UFB in Auckland.

And to Sydney

Also try and find out what ISP the remote site you VPN to uses. And then try to find out what Tier 1 provider that ISP in turn uses. Then see which NZ ISPs peer with that same provider. To help keep the traffic "on net" as much as possible within the USA.

Snap uses Telecom Global Gateway for their USA transit. And I think they in turn peer with Cogent in the USA.

Peering arrangements would probably make the biggest difference to speeds to USA sites. So imagine the problems testing if the connection to the remote site goes via multiple tier 1 providers. And the speedtest stays within just 1 tier 1 provider.

You might be right... looks like there's an internal issue with VOCUS (NZ Auckland) - unless that is the AKL (NZ) -to- CA (USA) connection.
