hi,
im looking at unlimited naked broadband plans.
i have experience with maxnet and vodafone.
maxnet had good speed and never limited my downloads.
i mainly download from rapidgator and use warez-bb. and occasionally download torrents.
vodafone however used to limit each download to 200k, so in order to use my full speed i would need to have 5 downloads running at once. now this is ok if im downloading files that have multiple parts, but when i want a quick movie or tv show to watch it takes ages.

maxnet unlimited naked broadband is $124 a month which is quite a lot more than every one else

what other isps would people recomend?

thanks
Liam

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

i have a vodafone modem already, a no term contract would be a bonus but not essential. my main question would be who else like maxnet dosnt limit download speeds?

Can you confirm they dont limit downloads? The vodafone suport people i spoke to swore they wernt limiting anything when my download speeds were saying otherwise. I use 'idm'for rapidgator. It must b part of the fair use policy?
Thanks for the reply

What type of connection do you have now? ADSL, VDSL, fibre, cable? If you can answer Peter's questions it may help.

When I called Spark at the end of March they said their unlimited plan would not have traffic management come April.

I use Trustpower at home, $49 month for first 12 months for unlimited ADSL or UFB. It is a 2 yr contract though and the second 12 months price is guaranteed not to exceed $79/month. At the moment, we have the ADSL plan and the speed tests I've done have always been around 11-13Mb/s. Plus I have never ever been put on hold when I call them. Usually within 2-3 rings the phone is answered by a real person, and they can take care of everything I ask them, no being transferred from one person to another and being re-indentified and asked to explain the situation again. That to me is worth a lot. Would be great if ISPs published their bandwidth per customer.

I don't torrent so cannot comment regarding traffic management of torrents. My family do stream netflix and youtube a lot and it always runs in HD, every hour of the day and night.

I believe data capped plans don't have traffic management, perhaps those would suit you better.

I curantly dont have any internet. When i did it was adsl2. I used vodafond at 2 different locations and had roughtly the same max speeds. Would stil only downloadtat 200k per download and also most files would need to be redownloaded if the connection was interupted. (the resume feature woudnt work). Take my computer back to my parents (who use maxmet) and get fulspeed per download and the resume feature workes

I didn't realise there had been industry change away from traffic management. That's good news.

I'm 90% certain Vodafone isn't your issue.
I'd take a look at your own setup as Vodafone aren't rate limiting your downloads to 200Kb/s.
File locker sites are notoriously bad for poor single thread speeds in order to try get you to buy premium membership.
Add the fact that they're typically hosted in dodgy european countries to avoid copyright laws which means you're never going to get good single thread speeds from NZ due to TCP limitations.

Do torrents with alot of seeds get better speeds?

My VF VDSL connection regularly downloaded at 5.4 Mbyte/s on steam at my previous flat. VF don't limit your speed. Like your posts says they do. As Andib says your problem is going to be something else.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.

I have a priemum subscription with rapidgator. 1 get 1-2Mbs when downloading 5 files at once. I had a read through a few terms and conditions of majour isps and they mostly had a clause that they may limit pear to pear speeds for the good of the network. Also i saw a thread on here where flip (i think it was flip) said they somtimes limit pear to pear down to 128k. Can you please explain to me why there is a diferance in single download speeds between maxnet and vodafone? Like i said i take my computer to both houses so as far as im awear the only diferance is the isp. Both locations have about 2Mbs top speed. The only diferance is single file download speed. Thanks for the replys so far

Disclaimer first. Without testing and isolating the problem we won't be able to tell you for sure what the cause is. Eliminating a few things it is not is however much easier.

Now in your case I suspect the problem is likely to be the upload end. Essentially you can only download as fast as the other end is prepared to upload to you. I'm not familiar with rapidgator but from a quick google it does not appear to use p2p technology and thus even a provider specifically limiting p2p would not limit this.

P2p swarms are particularly vulnerable to the problem of low upload speeds  purely by the nature of how they work. To clarify I mentioned earlier my really fast speeds on Steam. I was able to get these speeds because Steam was prepared to pay for bandwidth to allow people to download that fast. P2p relies on leveraging individual users upload capacity to spread the data with maybe a few host seeders. Most consumer grade internet connections have far greater download capacity than upload. With xDSL this is almost always the case. If the hosts seeders are consumers then they are unlikely to have great upload capacity either relative to the combined download capacity of the swarm. The exceptions you are most likely to find to this are computer games that distribute patches that are partially p2p based like WoW. Alternatively you may find a Linux distribution where the proportion of seeders so outweighs the leeching swarm that you may encounter good speeds. This is less likely to occur for the content I suspect you are having trouble downloading.

Please note: I have a professional bias towards Vodafone.
