The National Broadband Map is talking about VDSL2 upload speeds to 18Mbps. I recall a few months ago there was something about increased speeds being planned. Can someone fill me in please?

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

998 bandplan changes upper limits to be 70/30 to hit that you would need to be on 17a though.

with 8b on 998 US0 is enabled, however US1 is smaller than 997 Overall this equates to a drop in upload on 8b while 17a shoots right up.

and the National Broadband Map is very very poor tool to use at the moment, and is fill of incorrect/out of date information. i would steer clear till they sort out the issues with it.

Can I ask, what is 8b and 17a, also how do you tell what you have?

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

you can tell by either your sync speed, generally under 50 down is 8b, though you could be under 50 but quiet close to it and still have 17a, i have had 47 down before while still being on 17a. Some modems do show this info, otherwise you would need something like dslstats or similar and look at the spectrum graphs and see where the tones are are.

Very few modems actually dont show what profile they are on, however many are hidden behind telnet to get to it.

with 998 8b can hit 55mbit pretty solidly.

Essentially the difference is, 17a uses up to 17.664mhz where as 8b only does up to 8.832mhz.

For lines over about 500M the benefit of the extra bandwidth is lost over the distance and so it makes more sense to make use of that profile with a lower power level for shorter lines. Keeping 8b for the shorter lines and using a slight bit more power.

With 998, chorus seem to be taking this a step further, defaulting to 9dB snr on 8b while sticking to the standard normal 12dB on 17a.

Likely the drop in snr on 8b and enabling of US0 is also partially to make up for the fact than 998 has far less upstream bandwidth.

I suspect on unstable 8b lines, we could see 12dB profiles pop up as DLM trys to "stabilize" the line.

i reckon the easisest way to know if you're on 17a is to look at your attainable upload speed. if its' like 30 something megabit then you're on 17a. if you're on 12 megabit or something then you're on 8b.

We have suddenly had a speed boost in the past week. Before it was consistently 24.5/9.6 and it's now 31.4/9.6 Anyone know what's happened?

unless you look at the bands there is no real way to tell if this is related to the 998 upgrade or not. I dont think it is through as you upload is still the same
