Hey, my flat in Glen Innes/Panmure area is currently on a naked broadband plan with Slingshot. Speeds are very average, generally 6.5Mbps down and 1.0Mbps up. This is probably a very obvious question but will changing the ISP have much/any of an effect on these speeds or is it largely down to the wiring/congestion etc etc?

Unfortunately its a bit of a dead zone for mobile data too, get about the same speeds on my phone. Certainly no 4G out here! Haha.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

nope, new isp will use the same wiring and you are unlikely to see any improvement

what does the chours map show is available at your address?
going off your speed im guessing your exchange connected

Simple answer is no. More complex answer is possibly.

If you're connected via UCLL kit and are cabinetised then your speeds will probably be faster on a Chorus wholesale connection. None of are going to be able to answer that for you.

You would need to find out if Slingshot have you on a UCLL connection.

A good place to start would be looking at the Chorus maps to see what should be available. If you are in a VDSL zone then you will most probably get a better sync rate on ADSL if you were served from a cabinet (Chorus wholesale connection rather than UCLL). If the Chorus maps simply say '>10Mbps' then your sync rates are probably as good as they will get. As always, a splitter may help marginally if one isn't already installed as per PeterReader (haha Peter also talks about UCLL too).

See if you can connect to VDSL if not fibre and Glen Innes / Panmure do have 4G 1800Mhx sites

Thanks for all the fast replies.

Chorus Map shows >10Mbps. Checked out plans on the Vodafone site and VDSL appears unavailable. UFB upgrade is scheduled for Jul 2018-Jun 2019...

Not sure about the UCLL, if I give Slingshot a holla do I just ask them if our flat is on UCLL?

I don't hang out in the mean streets of GI/Panmure too much.. guess the flat is out of range of those 4G towers.

Unfortunately you're in a bit of a pickle then. You seem to be an exchange area, so in these cases a UCLL connection will give you better speeds.

Have you checked your house wiring?

I'm on UCLL connected directly to the Panmure Exchange, so if not cabinetised then you probably are too.

Either way, Slingshot does seem a bit slow for international traffic on weekends but all ISP probably give similar speeds on weekdays.

Time to find a new industry!
