Can anyone advise when we can expect to see naked dsl for light-use purposes? Slingshot way too expensive.

For, example, someone permanently hospitalised, unable to speak and not wanting to spend money on having a phone he can't use. Currently on ihug dialup and paying for a landline connection. And because he's spending $50k a year for 24/7 care, any extra unnecessary expenses are not welcome. All he wants is a faster Internet experience- and 256kbits each way and a 2 Gb data cap would easily be enough.

When will NZ ISPs realise that some people don't want voice, or VoIP telephony either?

Cheers
Jon

Kiwilink and supra both offer 3GB full speed plans at $60/month. Which is probably the cheapest around.

If speed isn't a big issue is there any reason why you don't consider Woosh or Vodafone? Both will be cheaper than any naked ADSL plan for somebody who only wants to use a few GB.

naked dsl will work out more expensive than traditional dsl if you dont need the full upload speed, i suggest changing to xnet they seem to be cheap, i was on the flood plain and have changed to naked dsl with them, the river plan sounds like what you would be after, full down and 128k up, worth a look, you can simply adjust the amount of cap you want by going to there website, you pay for what you use you dont have to buy chunks of certain amount. it works out to be around $1 a gig wich was about half of what xtra was charging me when i swaped over about a year ago. hope that helps

Hu? did i do that?
16Mb (EDO RAM), K6-II processor, 2Mb of onboard graphics. 32k dial up modem. 12 speed CD ROM. 5¼-inch floppy drive. 500Mb HDD.

I agree, mobile broadband would be worth looking into here, from either Telecom, Vodafone or Woosh.

If you mean by this, it's not Naked DSL (it's cable) and it's only 4mbps/2mbps.

You can check out PriceMe for a price comparison of broadband providers. Naked DSL plans are also listed.

Yeah, but THAT specific plan (10GB / $49.95) goes up to 4mbps/2mbps. Most other plans go upto the normal 10mbps/2mbps.

Problem with Naked DSL is that it still uses the phoneline for data even though no voice service is connected. The tolls pretty much cover the cost of providing voice service, so Naked DSL services still have to extract the line costs from you one way or another. If wireless/mobile is likely to do interesting things with hospital equipment then you would just need to wait for telecom line maintenance to get more efficient. Telstra do provide Naked DSL in parts of Auckland if you are a business and within range of one of their roadside cabinets. Most users cant get it but why not call Telstra and ask?

Time to find a new industry!

I think I remember reading in another thread that you can get naked dsl from xnet without their vfx phone service for $59.95 plus $1.00 per GB used. Its not mentioned on their website but I think thats what can be done. I have just found the other thread I was talking about http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=65&TopicId=18583 and pricing is right so that could be one of your cheapest options

I can confirm this, Xnet is $60 without the vfx service.

... which is still too expensive. A low-end dsl plan is about $40 a month, with a $45/month landline plan. So, what's stopping anyone dropping the landline and getting a dsl plan only for that same $40?

What we're really seeing is that the landline is subsidising the dsl to the tune of $20+ a month. Flip that around (changing the subject somewhat) and anyone with landline only is paying twice as much as they ought to.

But I still want a cheap dsl-only connection.

Cheers
Jon
