Anyone else experiencing this. It occurred around 5:30 yesterday and also managed to take out the Spark and 2Degrees mobile sites.

I'm really concerned that if we'd moved to a VOIP based platform we'd have been without both Phone and Internet at home. As we're still on PoTs I do have a voice line but no access to internet/mobile.

You reckon they will build in some more redundancy into the Ethernet network before they shut down the ATM network?

There is already huge redundancy built into the network. This is incident is a Fibre cut, not all Fibres are redundant / diverse.

Confirmed that Vodafone is also affected. For a coastal area like Muriwai that presents a huge risk if an accident occurs.

Outage is on chorus's network side, all providers are likely affected unless they have private back-haul to their own DSLAMS in the exchange...

Fiber damage has been located at approx. 5km from Waimauku and approx. 10km from Kumeu. Technicians are working on faulty fibers. No current ETR. Next update on status change.

Thanks for that. So the Fibre must be following Old North Road rather than SH16 based on those distances.

Okay so it is that fibre, so yeah outage is on boundary of 903 ONR, I think a contractor installing services to the other side must've given it a love tap with a drill. (Saw some equipment leaving about 6 ish).

OUCH that's going to be expensive for the contractor if they find him.... Cost recovery exercise

This is a serious problem that we have to sort out.

Let's consider some facts:

* VoIP is here and POTS is going.

* All carriers are building skinny systems that break down.

* Fibre is not yet diverse everywhere.

We have to put in our own systems that use more than one network that can be relied on.

Photo of current worksite: https://goo.gl/photos/RHbFWBrUYhfecngx5 (I'd upload here but mobile is extremely shoddy due to the outage, if a mod would like to sort it out/embed, have at it).

We have to put in our own systems that use more than one network that can be relied on.

in this instance, multiple fibres have been cut.

This includes fibre to mobile connections in the area. knowing the layout of the area you would be hard pressed to have an alternative connectivity option.

as for POTS going away, POTS is still available and will be for years to come.

This is one instance where i do wonder why we don't have fibre running along SH16 too but its all being resolved.
