I'm on VDSL getting 70/30 so I'm not exactly hurting, but they have announced they are going to finally lay fibre on my street so I'm having a think about it.

My number one gripe/concern is that I use DD-WRT and some pretty customized firewall, routing and other services.  As such, I don't want to use a Fritzbox and would prefer to stay on DD-WRT.

My stumbling block is the part about handling the phone lines aspect.  If I go to UFB it would make sense to kill the copper phone line as well so I need a router that has phone ports like the Fritzbox so I can keep my phone number and run it all through the fibre connection.

Anyone doing this here without using a ISP provided router?  If so, how are you doing it and what hardware are you running?

You either need to go with a UFB provider who does voice via the ONT or move to a 3rd party VoIP provider that allows you to use your own hardware.

If you pick an ISP that supplies voice from the ONT then you can use any router (as long as it supports VLAN tagging if required).

I have a Fortigate 100D and Fritzbox 7490. ISP is 2degrees. Fritzbox only handles the VOIP line from 2degrees. WAN1 on my Fortigate is configured internal internet traffic for all hardware in the house. WAN2 I configured it for the Fritxbox on a different subnet but have a ifrewall policy so I can remote on to the Fritzbox if I need to. Fritzbox is configured with an option in it to 'connect directly to the internet' with all of it''s firewall features turned OFF. I also disabled international calling on the 2Degrees website self service portal from our VOIP line. It works fine but you need good appliance like Fortigate that lets you do smarts like these.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I have a similar setup to @billgates above, but with Vodafone as my ISP. My router is an old Linksys e4200 running Tomato firmware. The Vodafone supplied router (HG659) sits behind it, and effectively just operates as an ATA. Have been running this setup for about a year, and seems to work well.

If you choose to go with Vodafone, then there are some step by step instructions to get this working here: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=198107&page_no=3#1595908

as others have mentioned, running the RSP RGW as a ATA behind your device is always an option.

Otherwise, an RSP such as spark, will do voice over the ONT rather than an ATA. There are other RSP's out there that do this too, however yeah... Many use RGW devices instead.

It didn't even occur to me to simply use the ISP provided hardware as an ATA behind my 3rd party router.  Good suggestions here. Thanks!
