Chorus' availability tool has been showing fibre would be available in my street March 2019 for the last few years. The street install started in October last year and was wrapped up by early December. Haven't heard anything since then (still no email or flyer in my letterbox) but I've been checking the Chorus tool every few days to see when the fibre would light up.

On Monday the Chorus checker changed. It no longer reported fibre was coming in March 2019, but it doesn't say it's available either. It now simply says VDSL is the best available connection at our address, and fibre is grayed out. I assumed this was just a transitional stage that would be replaced with confirmed availability in the next day or two, but it's now Friday and the page hasn't changed. I checked the Chorus broadband map and it does show UFB in my street.

I've gone through a few ISP availability checkers and most of them (Spark, 2degrees, Vodafone, Voyager, Slingshot, Orcon, etc.) will allow me to sign up for UFB. However Skinny (my actual ISP) and Bigpipe report no fibre availability.

Would anyone with access to the Chorus system mind having a quick look at my address for me, and let me know whether it is worth contacting Skinny now? I'm sure this will all get sorted out by itself in time but after waiting five years for fibre you could say I'm a little impatient...

I can certainly understand your impatience - I have been in a similar position.  Fibre was run in my street early December.  When I checked the Chorus address checker about 2 weeks ago I finally got the green light on Fibre.  Checked with my ISP and ordered it.  The Chorus leaflet advising Fibre was available arrived yesterday 😉

I would suggest you try to order Fibre through your ISP and see what happens.

The Skinny database on the website is not always up to date. If other ISPs are offering fibre then your address should be good to go. You can email Skinny and ask them to check Chorus Portal for you.

Looks like it can take up to 20 weeks from street duct to fibre availability...

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

Thanks for that, hadn't read it before. I know there's always a delay after the physical build before the network is open for business, which is why I started patiently checking the availability tool every few days this month. Didn't really expect to see anything change until March but got excited on Monday.

It can take up to 14 weeks to build our fibre network in a cabinet area, and once that’s done there’s still some further administration and testing work we need to do before you can place an order with your broadband provider.  This administration and testing work takes around six weeks after build completion. All of this work needs to be completed before anyone in the cabinet area can place a fibre order so if yours was one of the first premises we were working outside of, it may seem like you’ve had to wait a little longer.

Guessing I'm right at the end of the "further administration and testing work" right now.

Thats what I find, maybe a bit less for us, 3 months perhaps. The fibre "cable" is in the street but not the internet. The cables, once all done need to be connected to the cabinets/hubs and back to the central hub and configured so they are "in" the LFC's network. Just as mounting a new car engine, doesn't mean you can now drive away, all the last fiddly bits come next.

Richard has confirmed that all looks good to go on Chorus's end - woohoo. Thanks all for the help and suggestions. Hope this thread assists any other impatient geeks wanting to order their UFB installation as fast as humanly possible 😁
