I am trying to figure out the highest Fiber speed ISP providers in NZ and this seems really difficult as it may be opinion-based.

However, I have found these links which help me to have a better understanding of the ISP speeds in NZ, but these do not agree with each other.

https://ispspeedindex.netflix.com/country/new-zealand/  =>Based on this TrustPower and Spark have the highest NetFlix speed

https://ipv6-test.com/stats/country/NZ =>Based on this 2degree and Vodafone have the highest IPv6 tests.

https://www.broadbandcompare.co.nz/n/stuff-fibre-the-big-winner-at-the-broadband-compare-tuanz-awards    => Based on this Stuff is the best Fiber provider

I appreciate other thoughts and sharing of other resources on this topic.

Thanks

Mohsen

I get 100/100 on my plan and its good enough for me

if you are on a max/max plan and you are getting over 500-600mbps I think your doing ok, which most providers do

There are lots of different ways of measuring speed, so don't be surprised if one ISP shows better in one test and worse in another. Of the 3 links you've provided only 1 is related to speed (the IPv6 one is how many customers have IPv6 and the TUANZ one includes customer service). When you're on fibre all ISPs are going to be very close in speed from your home to their network, and then maybe some differences from there to the content you're after.

Have a think about what you need good speed for. eg if it's to watch Netflix then the slowest fibre plan from any ISP will be fine. If it's to upload GB of video in a short time to Singapore then you might be more selective.

Even in a technical community like geekzone, none of us are that concerned about which is the 'fastest' provider as it was so arbitrary.   Stuff fibre will be showing high in these tables as they don't have customers on ADSL or worse to lower their average speed, not for any technical wizardry.

There are a few ISP's that'll always show as "top" on these sorts of charts - they're MyRepublic and Stuff and here is the reason:

MyRepublic: They ran a promotion not too long ago upgrading all their customers to Gigabit. This caused them to be ranked #1 for NZ's fastest ISP and now they blatantly advertise this on their website and on advertisements. Well, let me tell you now. Given their "Score" was only 178.19Mbit and all their customers had Gigabit I call this a rather poor effort on their part both with the speed being pretty poor, and the fact they're now blatantly lying. Avoid at all costs, seriously.

Stuff: They don't run their own network (they use Devoli who are however great). This does mean there is no direct line of support for problems etc that may occur as they're simply a reseller. As they're fibre only they always show up as near the top (where other ISP's have ADSL / VDSL / Fibre / Wireless).

Broadband Compare is also very bias. It is essentially an advertisement platform as they get kickback from the ISP's for each referral.

Now, high speed depends on your perspective. Are you planning on only using WiFi? Are you going to stick to either your ISP's router, or supply your own (which may not be able to route Gigabit speed internet)? Do you use Ethernet? What are you doing with your connection that "needs" to be as quick as possible?

If you want a connection that is both "fast" and good and need a good performing router to go along with it then pick either Spark or 2degrees - the latter being better for NZ based performance where speed from your local Linux mirror is important. If you have your own router already then go with Voyager as they're fast and good. But really, you've asked a very open-ended question.

Just did a speedtest to 2degrees in Auckland using the Speedtest app. 900up 502down. Dubious advertising, quite possibly, but I'll stick with MyRepublic for now.

Thank you, this is a good response regarding why Stuff was not on the list, I mainly need a good speed during working hours for video conferencing. I am using NowNZ and sometimes their speed falls down (today on one test it was  20 out of 100, I need to do more tests, also maybe the video conferencing servers may be slow). However, I am thinking of switching to Stuff and have a better consistent fibre speed. I also need a modem as my model is very old DSL-2750U, so instead of buying a modem and then switching to another ISP, I think it would be better to switch to one which also offers a modem + consistent fibre speed. However, putting my personal preference away, these answers help people to make better decisions.

yes, you are 100% correct about the IPv6, but I am thinking of it as an indirect metric for measuring the investment effort, So, it is possible that ISP which spends more on IPV6, also spend more on improving the speed/quality (or not!).

not quite as straightforward as that... spark, with their volumes of IPv4, has very little motivation at this point (total guess on my part) to deploy IPv6. definitely doesn't mean they're falling behind in network performance.

@nitro While I still recommend Spark as a "simple" ISP I don't support their views on peering in New Zealand especially between ISP's. There is also still a lack of IPv6 even though pretty-much all other providers have support for it these days.

IPv6, I can live without if needed but the fact some ISP's are saving money by not peering with Spark because it is cheaper to route traffic to Australia and back to NZ again to Spark really gets me - it shouldn't be like this. This is a subject for another day though.
