It looks like Juha's Geekzone Blog (Techsploder) is causing some in the goverment to act:

As well as Telecom receiving copies of the Cabinet papers, some web logs also seemed to have got wind of the pending decision.

"Rumours from Wellington - and that's all what they are at the moment - say the New Zealand government is not just fed up with Telecom's slow progress when it comes to rolling out broadband in the country, but will actually do something about it next week," the Techsploder blog said last week

"Here's the dynamite though: the sources say local loop unbundling is on the table when Cunliffe's stocktake is presented to the cabinet.

"A structural separation of Telecom's retail and wholesale operations is also included, but little else is known.

"The local loop unbundling is apparently a firm decision, but the structural separation may be jettisoned if Telecom squeals too loudly."

Miss Clark's spokesman said the blog comments added to the need for an inquiry.

This is from Juha's post with the scoop.

Hey, Juha, are the black helicopters flying over your house yet?

There would seem to be a problem with the black helicopters. The government spent all its money investigating Telecom and ULL. However you would think the bribes (should i say lobbying?) from slingshot and ihug etc would buy a few.

Anyway congrats to Juha on scooping this one!!

Guess what I see that this must have been Juha's post.

Just be thankful you're not in America where they send you to jail for not revealing sources! :-)

It is a shame the MSM (mainstream media) does not link to bloggers. The New York Times didn't use to until a big uproar in the USA about this. Perhaps we should make some noise?

Another newspaper talking about Juha's blog, but not giving him the Google juice from links:

It is disappointing, to say the least. I see that some of the local political blogs are quoting the story as well, without linking/tracking back to here. Bill English quoted the name of my blog in Parliament and the BBC links to Internet sources, so why can't Kiwi publications do the same?

Another disappointing example of how the MSM treats tech journalism: my colleague Paul Brislen wrote these two stories on John Third of Guinness Gallagher. a consultancy that specialises in sorting out public infrastructure issues.

The New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) wrote a story which is basically Paul's two stories mashed up, quotes and all. The story ran in Stuff and the Herald.

Needless to say, neither Paul nor Computerworld were compensated by the NZPA for the story. Paul wasn't even credited in it.
