When you dominate a market, take advantage of the situation -

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/04/synology-could-bring-certified-drive-requirements-to-more-nas-devices/

OK, I also posted a story about Brother copying HP's stupid printer policies a while ago and that turned out to be wrong, so pinch of salt time, but maybe something to think about anyway...

There have been many sad stories of people using incompatible drives with NAS units and having their data damaged or lost. I support Synology in their drive to certify drives to work with thier NAS units, so long as they certify by spec rather than by anything else.

I'm not convinced about how thorough the certification process is in the first place, given that one of the certified-compatible-with-my-model WD drives I bought had the mounting holes in the wrong place.

Have you looked at what drives are certified by Synology for their 2025 + range? I’ll give you a tip, the first three letters in the brand are Syn….

Is this not true of pretty much any certification that exists anywhere? Manafacturers will always certify their own gear first, presumably, they know better than anyone what and how their equipment interacts with each other. Also, presumably they had easiest access to their own stuff.

Synology have had a compatibility list for years, their own drives have been on it since they announced their own drives.

Whilst it's a possible this is being done as an entirely self serving mechanism, this single factor doesn't necessarily indicate so.

I'm reserving judgement for now. If this turns into an evil conspiracy, I reserve the right to join the uprising!

The DS925+ release is here now: Synology Announces DiskStation DS925+ and DX525 Expansion Unit

I have used one for a few weeks now, replacing my DS923+. My review will be live from 11AM here: Synology DS925+ Review

Ask away.

Looks like I'll be sticking to my existing NAS (DS1621+).

If it's working for you, no reason to change. If you have a DS923+ then the DS925+ is an upgrade - mainly for more CPU and the 2.5 Gb ethernet.

I am using the DS925+ with migrated WD Pro drives. As it is at the moment, if I need to replace any drive then it must be a Synology. No big deal as I can do as required.

It's a bigger deal if you are migrating from one to another using the Assistant. In this case you need new drives and then all must be Synology.

The company has mentioned they are working with OEM to certify other drives.

I have never installed proxmox and/or Nextcloud on as many Ugreen or Qnap NAS as I currently have. And they even work! 😉

I'm a big Synology fan, though I think their handling of this could have been better.  They really should have certified at least a few other options ready for the announcement, to improve the optics on it.

Right now, some people are questioning their motives. It's not an ideal position to be in, when you are releasing new products and trying to announce a change.

I'm not even sure where you're finding the certification list: https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=drives doesn't have the DS925+ listed at all!

I'm in two minds on this, in terms of small to medium business Synology still feels like a solid choice. With my home enthusiast hat on, it is harder to make a case.

There is very little on the market with the polish and support of Synology. You'll pay more for that.

Of course, like in anything, you can save money by giving up your time. 'Most' people (and this excludes many people on GZ) want something plug and play as they either lack the time and inclination or expertise, to use something cheaper, but ultimately more complex.

Geekzone users aren't the target audience for Synology though I'd never roll my own despite having the expertise to do so, as I'd rather spend my time doing something else.

Horses for courses.
