cddt:

2. I think you got ripped purchasing an A8 CPU in 2018, since Zen 1 (e.g. Ryzen 1xxx series) were available since mid-2017.

Would have been one of those times like when Pentium 4's were sold as low end Celerons following Core 2 Duo. Even though retail price-wise would not have made sense OEMs and volume customers probably got a super good deal. At least socket and chipset/board wise they were supported with BIOS upgrades.

Yes, plus I was upgrading from an XP machine built in 2011, so anything was really an upgrade for me. I guess I'm trying to plan ahead a little bit for once.

I did see a 28" monitor in Noel Leeming today that was pretty cool, so I imagine a 32" would be even better again. Don't like those curved ones though, they look a bit weird.

You get used to curved real fast.
The monitor is an upgrade but 4k displays can cause issues with older apps.
I'd recommend 2560x1440 as the current sweet spot.
Also do note you'll need a discrete GPU to drive a 4k screen at 60hz.
Alternative is to 0ivot to a full Intel build which has display port on the motherboard.

Have you tried PB Tech, as mentioned earlier in this thread? They (among others) can build a PC for you.

This might be a good starting point (this is what I did in 2018):

Maybe for some motherboards.

My 5 year old Asus Maximus IX Hero motherboard:

- Supports Displayport 1.2 with a max resolution 4096 x 2304 at 60Hz

however

- Supports HDMI 1.4b with a max resolution 4096 x 2160 at 24Hz

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

Yes. I have found that. I have found that cutting back the display 4k resolution to a lower resolution often fixes the problems with older apps.

Display port is unfortunately not standard on AMD Motherboards.

Maybe I should look at two screens then. Is there a market for older, second hand displays?

Also can anyone suggest someone who custom-makes woodwork stuff? Shelves, etc. I'd probably need to replace my desk if I went down the two-screen road, but would need some shelves etc on top of a new desk, and not many new desks these days seem to have them - although I can find plenty with drawers.

Something like this: https://www.officemax.co.nz/Furniture/Office-Desks-Tables/Office-Workstations/Urban-Workstation-Snowdrift-82859 (although not in that colour) or this: https://www.officemax.co.nz/Furniture/Office-Desks-Tables/Office-Workstations/Emerge-Workstation-OD275-83243 could work although I would need to get additional stuff built for it (shelving, etc).

Maybe a picture of my current desk/setup would help?

Take a look at monitor arms etc. Trying to fit shelving etc where a monitor arm will do..... Especially when most screen use is either not done well or propped up with yellowpages.

Just revisiting this and saw the comment about the monitor arms - hadn't thought of this before. These might be a good solution:

In the event I decide to upgrade my PC (as funding permits!) I reckon this could be a good replacement for my existing case; it's running fine but I think the USB ports on the front are a little munted, due to having headphones plugged in and removed a fair bit over the last few years:

As long as it has space for an optical drive on the front (and this one looks like it does), I think it could be a winner 👍

Right, I think things are slowly coming together. This is looking like what I might go for:

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/CHACLM0201/Cooler-Master-Advanced-N200-mATX-Mini-Tower-Chassi

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/HDDSAM971251/Samsung-970-EVO-Plus-250GB-M2-2280NVMe-SSD-RWMax-3?qr=product_option

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/CPUAMD05600G/AMD-Ryzen-5-5600G-CPU-6-Core--12-Thread---Max-Boos

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MEMGSK3828/GSKILL-Ripjaws-V-Series-Black-16GB-DDR4-Desktop-Me

Total so far $547.95.

Not being upgraded: motherboard, 2 X existing 4TB hard drives.

Pending upgrade: monitor(s)

Would I need a new PSU for this setup, or would my existing one do the job?

Edit: just checked and apparently it's a "Cooler Master MWE Bronze 450".
