It is currently running our server so I would need to get something to replace it with. :)

I'm in one of those situations where I would need to know I could get something for my 4690k. Buying it off you then trying to sell my chip is bit of a funds risk for me. IDK how old is it?

@toejam Maybe your right, even the link shrub posted on page 1 shows only a 1-2 fps difference in the i7 and i5. So why the hang do they recommend an i7?

The fact your 4690k is doing 4k with BF1 is encouraging. The fps drops really only occur in the 64 player conquest maps, maybe occasionally in the other game modes. It seems to be when there's really a lot going on like lots of smoke, gas and buildings crumbling etc, I recall also when the maps are starting to get really beat up towards the end of match also. Maybe in some way it's quite random as well, I'll have to take better notes. Using DX11.

The reports that an upgrade is really going to be necessary is encouraging so that's great. I've never done AMD for CPU's so when more info comes out on Cannonlake I'll look into that.

I've seen reports that the 1070's performance gain over the 970 is huge and about on par with the 980, that's something I could look into. I'm actually considering RMA'ing my EVGA GTX 970 as one of the fans has pooped itself making a loud flutter. It seems kind of sneaky but has anyone ever asked for an upgrade at RMA?

Is a 1070 something that could really make a difference right now with current new releases?

I have a i7-4790K and play Battlefield 1 and it runs perfectly fine on all ultra settings paired with a GTX 980 Ti, CPU usage is around the 95% mark while gaming, stock speed of 4.0GHz.

I've got Battlefield 1 looking very nice with a mixture of Ultra, High and low settings i5 4690k and GTX 970 and I'm sure some of those settings could come up to. Most of the performance issues for me have been with the 64 player conquest maps where I have experienced significant fps drops, but for the game to make an i5 4690k fall over that significantly doesn't seem right, where talking sudden drops to 40-30 fps. I realize the conquest maps are going to be more CPU demanding but still? How is the 4790k faring with the conquest maps? I heard that there is a bug with the i7's where in some parts of maps the CPU utilization is only about 30% causing massive fps drops, somewhat the opposite to what is happening with the i5's.

95% on the cores during conquest for me too but more like 70-80% on the other game modes...

It's a very common issue unfortunately, I'm not sure why I don't have it, I also have the game on a SSD but that shouldn't make a difference, just make sure you're running the latest Nvidia driver, also try and uninstall Geforce experience and see if that helps improve it a bit, also use DX12 if you aren't already and try disabling the GPU memory restriction setting.

Well as the reply's are coming through it's looking like the idea of needing the i7 4790k may not be so true after all. I don't really use any apps that would benefit from hyperthreading and I was mainly curious as to why some games were recommending it. It that case it may be a waste of time. I appreciate your offer though and maybe if I do change my mind I can message you?

If you want to upgrade it for gaming then you are wasting your time jumping from a 4690k to a 4790k. Get a gtx1070 or gtx1080 and be done with it

EVGA are pretty good about RMAs - odds are good that you'll probably end up coming out with a better card than what you'll be sending in, but you'll be without a card for a while. Meanwhile, an RX 480 or a GTX 1060 will be a bit of a bump, up to around GTX 980 performance, or a bit better. GTX 1070 will bring you up further, just a smidge faster than the GTX 980 Ti, and GTX 1080 is in a league of it's own, although soon (supposedly January) we'll be seeing the GP102 based GTX 1080 Ti. I suspect AMD will start making noise about their Vega GPUs around January as well, so I'm not sure what the choice is to make.

A faster GPU will get you somewhere, and how much RAM do you have? 8GB is enough, but I'm starting to notice between games and all the background crap and Windows itself, 16GB helps.

Also, finally, once you launch into Battlefield 1, closing Origin, Battle.net, etc, will definitely help - those apps can be surprisingly hungry.

Agreed with this., also OP have you overclocked your i5? if you have try settings to stock and see if that improves fps?

Wow really, what do think they might replace a 970 with? A long wait won't be easy though, I've been lucky enough to have a Seasonic X660 replaced in NZ (by Seasonic) and even luckier to have it replaced with an Seasonic X750 KM3 for the one month wait of the new shipment to NZ!

Didn't realize the 1060 was up with the 980, sounds like the 1070 must be awesome. I had an AMD GPU on my old platform but it's been quite nice to go green again. I have 8 GB of Corsair Dominator Platinum ddr3 2400Mhz but I wanted to ask about more ram in gaming scenarios too as it seems some games are starting to use that bit more. If it's having to load the game into the pagefile then I can imagine that will cause problems. I can get a 16 GB Dominator Platinum kit from Amazon for $200 which is a really good price, I really should just go ahead with that. The pricing for the leftover NZ stock is ridiculous. Anyone interested in my old Platinum?

I'll try closing Origin, I sometimes use chat but we'll see. I also try to have minimal running when gaming too. Wow your ready to upgrade from a 1080? I suppose with 4k you probably need too?

I've also heard that reducing your graphics settings thinking that you'll gain performance can do the opposite in BF1 by offloading graphics tasks to the CPU instead causing more load. Better to shove all of that over to the GPU.

Set your CPU back to stock speed and try out BF1, also you can't close Origin while Battlefield 1 is open.

I'm still really struggling with the conquest maps in Battlefield 1. I'll get a lot hitching (minor fps drops) on some of the maps while others are a complete stuttering mayhem, notably Empires Edge (probably the worst) St Quentin Scar is another, Amiens has trouble and so does Monte Grappa.

I should have adequate hardware, the worst stuttering/fps drops I'm referring to is probably likened to what you might expect if trying to run these maps on a very old PC platform... I can only suspect that it is an issue on the games end. It is widely reported so I don't feel too alone but then people with very similar hardware configurations claim that they don't have issues which only makes things more confusing.

Don't get me wrong, I can play the other game modes with nearly no issues at all, it's most definitely the conquest maps that have issues.

@toejam I know you have the 4690k and claim your not having issues with BF1 but have the 1080. Is it possible these issues are GPU related? I didn't really think the GPU would be a bottleneck in this game as it looks to run quite light on resources. Never the less I could clock the 970 up...

@lNomNoml I admit I haven't tried under clocking yet, I'm not sure it will be a deal breaker but will try when I get a chance.

What settings are you running? Because for everything maxed at 1080 you really need at least a 980/1060. I suspect you're just expecting a lot of your gpu. Also, keep in mind that the gtx 970 only has 3.5gb effective ram.

My mate at work has the same CPU and a 1070 and it runs everything mint.
