MadEngineer: ^ that's what gets me. Stock hsf should be perfectly fine unless you're overclocking. In fact has this been checked I wonder - does it need a bios update ... has a voltage or clock setting been incorrectly set.

Have the shop check for bios updates if they still have it which should also include a reset to defaults.

It depends what you define as perfectly fine. As me, I prefer to keep CPUs and APUs always under 60 C, as I want to get the maximum life out of a system. Under that definition, the stock AMD cooler is not adequate when the system is working hard. Sure, many people may be happy with a much hotter system, I think it is much more sensible to spend a little extra to keep things cooler and quieter, and get a longer life out of your components. That being said, the OP's system is running very hot, even for a stock cooler. Maybe the APU is faulty. They should try dropping a replacement APU in there, if the BIOS is set correctly.

Hey guys,

DravidDavid: Idle has dropped down to 50° ° last night gave it a good hammer with various programmes/ games / you tube it's only hitting up to 55-75° and dropping back down with a few exceptions at 82°. Most of the time it's sitting under 60°

Bagheera: Yes indeed, thanks to you all here they have done that now when they wouldn't in the first instance.

GZT: Yep running HD vid it only gets up to 56° so far about 13 minutes into it.

AHitman: I did bring up the option of paying for a better cooler and was advised to wait until my next PC

MadEngineer: Def not over clocking, will look into bios update / voltage / clock setting. (Just got to Google to understnad how first)!

KiwiTim: Yeah I like to keep things running smooth to preserve longevity, next time I will definitely be spending the extra money for a better cooler.

Things are definitely working better! I can run more than one programme!

Right now got a game programme running, various tabs and it's at 55° so pretty happy. They replaced the cooler and upgraded it to one with 'pipes'. (I got no idea) and also fixed and screwed the USB ports in so I'm glad I was honest about that and didn't just try and fix it before sending it back to them

He said he had stress tested it all night with various windows / programmes and it had handled very well. (I believe this part as he left his gmail etc logged in lol)...

So right now I'm 100x happier than when I first got it back from repair knowing something wasn't right, being told everything was fine but not having the knowledge / know how to explain what it was. Which I wouldn't have been able to do without the advice from here!

Next time I'm upgrading, learning and buying local!

Glad you got the result you are looking for!

Dang, those new chips must run super hot after all. I get worried when mine gets over 42 degrees doing anything at all haha.

Here's hoping that temperature stays put this time. :D

It's good they upgraded the cooler for free. Imvho it still looks a little hot running, and I'd be concerned about what will happen in summer when ambient temperatures tend to be much higher and not so much advantage from the cold ambient in winter. Keep an eye on it as summer comes up. Since the supplier has been very cooperative so far, I'd confidently expect them to sort out any issue that arises in six months from the same source, pita tho for sure.

Yes, good indeed that they upgraded the cooler, but an idle of 50C with an after-market cooler is not ideal. As an example, I have 3 computers running in my home this morning. All have after-market coolers. The ambient temperature in the house is 16C.

A 9 year old socket 939 AMD dual core Athlon 2.2 Ghz, running Windows 8.1, has an idle temp of 42C at 2.2Ghz

A 4 year old socket AM3 AMD triple core Athlon II 460 3.4 Ghz CPU, Windows 8.1, has idle temp of 29C at 2.2GHz

A 3 year old i5-2500K Intel quad core 3.3 Ghz CPU, Windows 7, idle temp of 30C at 1.6Ghz

Obviously, the oldest CPU has the least efficiency and produces quite a lot of heat. You have a very new CPU that should be reasonably efficient.

What power profile are you using in windows? Have you set your CPU to run the "Balanced" power profile in Windows Control Panel / Power Options. If you have, the CPU frequency should be slowing down and speeding up as demand requires. If you have the Power Profile set to "High Performance", your CPU will constantly run at it's maximum frequency, generating more heat.

Is AMD Cool'N'Quiet enabled in your BIOS settings? This is the technology that enables the CPU to scale the frequency clock, based on demand. I would expect that the PC builders would have checked these things when you first reported your overheating issue. So these settings are probably set correctly.

Something is not right with your APU running idle at 50C. I would have thought that a modern APU with an after-market cooler should have an idle somewhere in the late 20's to late 30's.

What is going to happen when your PC is working hard in the summer time?

50c idle is a bit high. My PC's on 35 degrees, with a 23 degree ambient temperature. Hitting 75 is a bit high but not worryingly so. If it was my PC i'd probably clean the processor and attach it to the heatsink again, but for you probably watch and wait.
