I'd recommend steering clear of EVGA stock that has ACX 3.0 coolers unless you can confirm it's from a "fixed" batch - definitely inquire with the retailer.

I'm thinking of going for the EVGA GTX 1070 SC at $750. If I can sell my 970 that won't be too bad. I'm not certain I'll need all that power just yet but at least it will future proof and I should be able to do DSR easily. I've heard that games will be using more than 4 GB vram at 1080p though, I use 1900x1200.

I think overly sensitive is probably right. I've had a reply over at the BF1 forums and their understanding is that they will activate if you have a single dropped frame taking longer to draw than 16.6ms. (the tick rate of the server.)

He also says that BF1 has frame cadence problems on most systems to varying degrees and that everyone will encounter this at some point even if they have no performance problems.

Unfortunately I don't know what a frame cadence is, I haven't heard of it.

My game still hovers around 55-60 fps when locked to 60Hz making it stutter it a bit. I'm capable of getting more fps so I don't know why it does this for me.

Hah - given that you are gearing up to replace your 970 already, "future proof" is a pipe dream IMO!

I got my G1 for $718 from Mighty Ape...though I think you get a better warranty on the EVGA still

I did the bios update then I could overclock it higher. and filled in a form on their website and they sent me the thermal kit at no charge. I was able to install it very easily it took about 30 mins. Great card. The G1 gaming is also good.

Yeah, but not everyone is up to taking apart their GPU - You and I are rarities rather than the norm. Much easier to get one that has already had the thermal pads applied to the VRMs.

So is that what the fixed batch is, cards with the thermal pads applied? I'm pretty handy with my hands so shouldn't be any problem there...

I heard it was only the FTW edition that was affected? Maybe not as Guru3d's EVGA 1070 SC review notes the high temps around the vrm. https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/evga-geforce-gtx-1070-sc-superclocked-gaming-review,10.html There's no mention of avoiding the card though...

It's all EVGA's Pascal cards with the ACX 3.0 cooler that have the issue, so if it's an ACX 3.0 card (which the SC is), it can't hurt to cover your ass and save yourself some hassle having to order in thermal pads that'll take a couple of weeks then applying them manually and making your life that much harder.

Ah fair enough. I was going to go with Computer Lounge as I like them so I'll hit them up about it.

I could go Asus at same price but the EVGA looks so much better.

My 970 needs RMA'ing but I've decided that I'm probably going to buy the 1070 and sell off whatever I get back. I've never had a card as beastly as the 970 and the 1070 almost doubles that, so pipe dream? yeah.

What's the warranty on the Gigabyte?

It's all the cards. Including ftw ftw/dt sc founders and classified. They are shipping them fixed now. The pads are better but it didn't seem that bad when I pulled it apart.

Also I wouldn't bother spending more than $50 on a card with better aesthetics. The difference between the FTW and SC is the cooler is a bit bigger it has dual bios and it might be binned slightly better. I got my gpu to 2100 MHz and 4600mhz memory. Which is about the same as a ftw. If you can get a gtx 1080 at a price close to a ftw 1070 card then get the 1080.

Also you shouldn't need to replace the I5 unless you do a lot of CPU intense tasks and multi threading. Getting an i7 will make a minimal difference to FPS

Have you had the 1070 SC long? Why did Asus have to go with that white shell ughh. I think the SC will suit me. I'm making some inquiry's to retailers as to whether they stocking fixed cards.

Yeah I'm sticking with the i5.

Definitely not all the cards - my 1080 is an EVGA FE, and I took the cooler off and replaced it with the EVGA Hybrid Kit aftermarket, both coolers cooled the VRMs. The specific flaw is with the ACX 3.0 cooler models, in that there's no airflow, heatsink contact, or anything really at all to cool the VRMs - they just sit there being really, really hot.

Buy what suits - I highly recommend the EVGA cards, with the obvious issue prior mentioned, and MSI cards, notably their Gaming X range. Asus and Gigabyte are pretty good too, but don't spin my wheels too much. Get what suits you, and if price is an issue - probably just put up with the issues you're facing for now, because you'll be feeling mighty unhappy when the prices plummet early next year, with the GTX 1080 Ti looming, and the RX 490 already leaking.

So yeah, if you check the warranty on the Gigabyte page, it just refers you to the reseller.

The Might Ape product page has the following:

"Release date NZ June 22nd, 2016 Manufacturer code: GV-N1070G1 GAMING-8GD Brand

Warranty Period 1 Year Box Dimensions (mm) 405x235x90 UPC 889523006054 All-time sales rank Top 5000 Product ID 25292569"

If you fork out for the "Xtreme Gaming" model you get 4 year warranty if you register, so EVGA definitely have the edge on the warranty side.

Sorry yeh, the founders edition is not a problem. its ACX 3.0 cooler cards.

Yeh I bought it at the beginning of October, it came with gears of war 4 and this was before the overheating problem became public. I wanted one with "white LED's" and the FTW edition whilst it had RGB settings, people were having trouble getting it to display a nice white light. So thats what sold me on the SC. Also some SC cards were overclocking just as much as the FTW cards. And the FTW card was $80 more at $799 when I got my SC card for $720.

Its a really nice card. Mine is not the black edition so it does have a backplate. I am running an i5-6500 but have overclocked it to 4.48 Ghz using a base clock overclock.
