Second hand 3400G for $130. If you need a cooler (you probably don't, the one you have will work) allow another $50-80

Edit: Brand new 4600G for $282 if you really want 6 cores.

Looks like prices have changed (understandably) on PC parts recently - the CPU I was going to use has doubled in price 😮

Given my case/usage scenario, what would be the cheapest - and most suitable - option on this page, staying with the same CPU brand, etc?

I dont know what the local retailers are smoking, with those prices, however if you dont mind buying international you can get this via amazon au which in recent times ive found to be fantastic with quick shipping and great customer support...

Thanks but I'd rather get my parts locally. Have had bad experiences in the past where things die and it's impossible just to walk back into the shop if the seller is overseas.

5600 series pricing seems to be bouncing around at the moment. The 5600g has been volatile here in Dubai as well I’ve just upgraded to a 5600 so have been keeping an eye on it.

Buying new it’s worth putting some effort in and sniping good prices.

Thread bump, it's (very) slowly coming together. CPU is the last piece of hardware I need to get.

Regarding software: my current machine runs Windows 10 and I'd really like to stay using it on my new one if I could - not too keen on 11, and I already paid to get 10 installed on the current one anyway.

Years ago I seem to remember an application named "Ghost" (might have the name wrong) that basically cloned/copied your existing OS onto a brand new PC, retaining everything with minimal effort. I have no idea if said application was around; like I say this was a long time ago...but if not, what application would do the same thing these days?

just take your existing hard drive and put it in the new computer? unless thats being upgraded too?

There are heaps of different software that can clone your drive for you, macrium reflect being one of them

Finally! I have the new machine up and running, and ended up getting this motherboard (as suggested above):

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MBDGBM35522A/Gigabyte-B550M-DS3H-AC-mATX-Motherboard-For-AMD-Ry

There's a slight issue though. All of the SATA power cables appeared to be hard-wired into the power supply for the case, and they don't reach long enough to power my optical drive. All the other hard drives are powered up and working just fine though (as is the rest of the machine - yay!) 😊

Is there such a thing as a SATA extension cable? Or can I maybe power the optical drive via a different connector on the motherboard?

For reference, the connector on the back of the optical drive is identical to the SATA power connector in this image:

And this is the new setup I ended up going with (per Speccy):

The circled specification is the one I'm trying to fix 😀

Yep. I’ve had to use one of these (if not this, then something really similar) in the past, actually it might be in my z4.

Works fine.

Looks like a nice upgrade OP, hope it’s all going well!

That's good to know - can you please share a link to one? It would need to be in the 30-40cms range.

Ah I didn't refresh the page in time!

I actually had a look at one of those yesterday but I don't think it would work - it would need to be female SATA on one end and male SATA on the other to connect to the optical drive...unless there's a connector on the motherboard I could use for it? (I had a quick look but couldn't see one).
