ok didn't see this thread until Mauricio pointed it out :)
refering to the post I put here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=48&topicid=76825

Is this worth reporting at all to the likes of the DIA or police or they pretty done all they can and let the consumer beware?

Issue is pretty wild in Rotorua atm - lots of customers here calling us regarding computer support phone calls. We even had the neighbour come over with his cordless and he said he would hand the phone over to his computer shop neighbours - they hung up instantly.

Our whole franchise has been seeing this nationwide for a while now, and unfortionatly there are unsavy computer users that have lots of trust in what they are being told - I'm trying to get the word out to my customers, but unless people are made aware of it, many more will be duped.

I just hope they call me - I'm running Ubuntu 10.10! Maybe theres a debian based tool around to backtrace them while they look at issues on a virtualbox hosted XP session :P

Actually the first message in this thread was posted back in August 2010. So it's been going on for almost nine months now.

Think they tried it on me a few weeks ago... I say think, because I got fed up with the delay on the line and the noise in the background so I hung up.

Newstalk ZB has good reach. Draft a press release foremannz ; ).

Ideally, record a vm session including phone audio and give tv media a call. That will take longer to set up obviously.

Someone I know who has had the scammers call, always sees a local number, never seems to be an intl number.

Had a client called today and they took down a number to call the scammers back on. It was an 09 number but this then diverted to the "noisy" operators again.

I would say they are possibly using hacked PABX boxes to "proxy" the calls.

We havent had any calls yet from these scammers, got everything ready to take them on a ride and record the call.  Im assuming guys get numbers at random from the whitepages online as they know your last name?  So they should know your address too then if thats the case.  I run an IT business from home so they possibly know from the address, hence no calls.

Here is my input... also sent to Telecom.

Phone call received with caller ID 124 (this appears to be the number you call about underground cables).

Time 1750 on 10 Feb 2011.

Well spoken male voice.

Caller claimed to be responding to lots of error messages received from a Microsoft Windows 7 Computer at our location (Napier).

When my wife offered to hand the phone to me, the caller disconnected the call.
