I am not particularly observant so I often don't notice things until I suddenly do. This morning I became aware of an odd artefact at the top of the Geekzone page. This is not caused by my display. It is specific to Geekzone and only shows when the page is scrolled up to the black area at the top, above the links in yellow at top right.

What I see is faint green vertical lines extending across the display. The lines appear to be made up of pixels that are rapidly flashing off and on, giving the lines an appearance of vibrating motion. It is quite possible this has existed as long as Geekzone has, but I only noticed it this morning. Is it supposed to be some kind of decorative effect?

I just tried a screen capture which I saved to a jpg. I still get the dancing lines on the static image. What on earth is this?

This is your display controller or monitor slowly dying causing artifacts. Or HDMI getting interference. If its on a screenshot then clearly nothing the browser is doing since jpg cant carry motion, screenshots dont carry motion etc.

Seriously, what is this? It is also on your screen shot. It has nothing to do with my monitor or controller because GZ is the only place I see it. I know jpg doesn't carry motion. That's what makes it so weird.

well clearly something is messing up that shade of grey to add green artifacts. Perhaps get a video of what is happening?

It is really weird but I think it has to be some kind of HDMI artefact. I just duplicated the screen to a VGA LCD monitor and there is no sign of it there, but it is still merrily dancing away on the HDMI. It is a narrow band extending across the top of the screen that only appears in the dark grey (not black, my bad) area above the links. It is faint but very clear and distinctive. I don't see it on any other page with a dark background and it doesn't appear at any other dark location on a GZ page. It is very specific to that band at the top. Yet it also appears on a jpg so there must be something in the image that is causing it. The only thing I can think of is that a specific shade of very dark grey triggers it for some reason. Yet I don't see it on similar backgrounds at other locations on the screen. Very strange. I suspect that even if I do make a video of it, the dancing lines will only be visible on my HDMI monitor, since that is where they appear on the jpeg.

Sorry, I misunderstood your intention. I don't have a cell phone and my camera broke so I can't easily video the screen. Maybe I can take a picture of it with my tablet. I will give it a try.

It will be the HDMI then, try changing resolution and then back again to make it re-do all the clocking. I had the same thing happen on some almost dead dell monitors over DVI but with blue. Didnt see it on the brighter colours unless you looked really closely, but on the darker ones it was covering any gradients with weird banding of blue static. Totally lost the dvi input not long after it started and then wouldnt power on most of the time after that. I suspected crappy caps since it was really old.

Edit: this doesnt always display aka, just on occasions and just now I have refreshed the homepage and its gone again.

Perhaps this is messing with your browser?

Im using safari on a mac.

If I was into conspiracy theories I would now be very suspicious of the mods. I was busy struggling with my Android tablet, which with a perfect sense of timing suddenly doesn't want to transfer the photos I took over USB. Then I decided to return to GZ to see if there was an update. Guess what? The mystery artefact has completely disappeared! No trace of it. Make of that what you will.

And it just occurred to me to check the jpeg I took earlier and it has also disappeared from that! Talk about spooky action at a distance! So okay, it is definitely something my HDMI monitor is doing, but god only knows what. I hope it doesn't suddenly grow tentacles.

It was there again this morning and is gone again now. Clearly something to do with my screen, especially as it seems to be having other issues. Still very peculiar.

Of course it could also be what freitasm says.
