Aloha: My Maploader sw never crashed, I downloaded 100MB maps in one day (I dont say its fast) and never had any problem.

Change your buggy computer and use Ericsson phones for Gods sake instead of whinging about Nokia phones in every thread! :) (no offence btw)

I chucked that computer away! And will never touch another amd as long as i live, i don't know anything that did not fully crash once. After the maploader i knew something was just wrong

This update was well worth getting unlike v11 it's quicker and much less buggy. bliss at long last!

Send him an email requesting the N95 version and he will email it back.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

peejayw: This whole maps situation needs clarifying, here is my 2c worth if it helps.

The N95 has a native app called Maps (Smart2Go). This uses maps which are resident on your phone and can be downloaded to your pc for transfer. There is no need for a data or inetrnet connection to your phone when using the Map app, only when you want to get turn-by-turn guidance. Currently the NZ map is poorly detailed and TBT is not available, maybe next year this may improve.

Google Maps in a map-browser, it has no GPS functionality ie it cannot tell you where you are, it just displays maps on your phone, these have to be downloaded as "tiles" over the net and incur data charges!

Mobile Google Maps Or MGMAps is a freeware project that currently uses a perl script to download 100's or 1000's of "tiles" from Google Maps and store them on your phone. The app, which is free, uses the N95 in-built GPS receiver and calls up the needed map tile from your phone as required. You do have to put a bit of work in getting the map tiles but once you have done it, it's like riding a bike! However, the big issue is that currently, MGMaps is causing big problems with memory usage on the N95 and until Christien can find the answer, really MGMaps is not an option.

SmartcomGPS is a commercial product ($40US I think) that works with the N95 internal gps unit. It has voice guidance, map rotation and lots of other features but you have to make or obtain your own maps using a range of software. At first I found the procedure quite daunting but now its a piece of cake. This is the only piece of GPS software that has given me the ability to get turn-by-turn navigation and detailed NZ maps. You need to be comfy with things like Photoshop or at least stitching image files together as well as basic GPS issues. If anyone is serious about using this product I am happy to help.

SportsTracker is not a mapping app, it has some other nice features but is not going to help you with navigation.

Thanks peejayw - that's a good explanation. So, the built-in Maps app on the N95 can use pre-installed NZ Maps? And you can download them to your PC and transfer them to the N95? Is that right? If so, where do I download them from for Maps?
When I used the program (Maps) it did ask me how I wanted to connect, and I think I chose VF Gateway - is this correct? And if it's not for downloading maps, is it only for the GPS data? It seemed to take a while to display the map, so I thuoght it must be downloading the map. How do I know if the NZ map is already on the phone?

For the built in maps use Nokia Maploader software to download the maps (Google)

VF Gateway is for the wap connection (VF Live) dont use it for downloading. Use VF Internet instead.

OK, so what I would do is run the Maploader software to download the NZ maps to my computer, then transfer these to the memory card of the N95. Does this mean I can go to the N95 Map programme settings and turn off the network access (because it's using the maps on the device now), and GPS will still be able to tell me where I am?

Use the Maploader and download NZ maps, it will automatically transferred to your memory card.

After you can disable the network access in the settings and the GPS sw will use the downloaded maps = it will be able to tell where you are :)

Should i ever use Vodafone gateway (what i've currently been using). i.e. browsing net, checking emails etc?

No. VF Gateway is only for wap or Vodafone Live!

All emails, web browsing should go thru VF Internet.

If you have an WLAN network available, you should use that for the e-mails because it will be cheaper than the Vodafone ones.

Can't beat the burble of that American V8. Ohh yea!

I have a SE P910i running SmartComGPS software with a bluetooth gps receiver. Its sofisticated mapping software but getting decent maps for New Zealand is a pain. Im thinking of getting an N95 just to have built in gps and decent nz maps.

Currently the NZ maps for the N95's smart2go are rubbish. Apparently they will be upgraded sometime at the start of next year. I hope they do because the current maps are so bad it's not funny.

Ok so i just bought a n95 from a parallel import and none of the gps functions seem to work. i have download the nz map but i can not get a gps position no matter where i go... Any suggestion on what i need to do? how long does it normally take to get a gps position?
