bigreddog: Bartender - courious - what are your free memory stats before and after

Before the format and hard reset, free memory on the phone was down to about 35MB

After the format and hard reset, the phone memory was 56.6MB

Now, after installing all my apps I previously had, but all on the Mass Memory drive, the phone memory currently stands at 52.4MB, Mass memory 29.8GB

Even after installing everything I had previously, it is running much much faster now, more responsive.

Have not had running long since I did all this, just today, so yet to see definitive results...no crashing yet.

sounds pirated.......... nav is a chargeable service though the maps are free.

Pixelpipe is a great service, makes it easier to share photos and video by intergrating with Nokia's Share Online app.
Added a link on this threads first post, with the others.

Still no crashes or bugs to report since I overhauled my N97.

Heres an interesting question...

The N97 has the following:
Phone memory = 74MB
Mass memory = 32GB
RAM = 128MB

Memory is obviously not an issue, but i is recommended to install apps on the Mass memory to avoid low memory warnings/errors...

But RAM is an issue...this is why apps run slow or crash, as there is not enough RAM.

So, here is the question:
- Can some memory from the Mass memory, be used as RAM, in the same way Windows can use a hard drive, as 'Virtual memory', a 'paging file'....???

Anyone know the answer to this?

I believe the answer is no, or at least it was a few months back the last time someone asked this at Symbian-Freak (there are a few programs that purport to do similar things, none of which have a shred of credibility with which to back up the claims).

It would be an obvious solution to the pyhsical lack of RAM...

Reading an article found here, it implies that on a forthcoming Nokia Tablet, which has simular specs as the N97 and has only 256MB RAM...its states the following:

The OMAP3430 500/600 Mhz processor and 1GB total virtual runtime memory (256MB physical RAM, 768MB virtual memory would mean that this mysterious device should not only outperform the N97 in day to day task and multi-tasking, but also in 3D games.

That sounds exactly what I am talking about...

I have finally taken the plunge and gone with a hard reset, and I am atempting to apply everything I have learnt in the last month or so, in regards of performance increases and not repeating mistakes I made previously...

Will post back my results, if I recommend this process, but so far, the results are amazing!

I have also done the hard reset and it has mangled my phone. I've lost a number of applications that came with the phone and Nokia Software Updater won't recognise the phone at all even though the other nokia apps sync my music & video correctly.

The biggest pain is that I have lost the Mail for Exchange application and the c:/installation directly has gone completly.

Only bought it two days ago and its running version 10 of the S/W. It won't recognise that there is a verion 11 anywhere.

I didn't realise that it completly wipes all the contacts off the SIM card as well.

I'm not happy. Anyone with similar problems find a way out of this mess? It was bought from a Vodafone reseller so while I should get support I would like to sort it out myself.

Interesting, pretty similar specs to the i8910 I have right now (which is substantially better than the N97, providing you don't absolutely need a physical keypad - I always thought I did but it seems I can live without it reasonably well in fact...)

The NSU, I assume your talking abou the PC app...try plugging, unplugging then replugging it back in again...there is a bug with the USB cable connection, it does not always recognise the connected device, and at times it also connects in the wrong mode (USB mode rather than Nokia Suite mode)

Also try changing the connection mode via the Ovi Suite program, found on the left of the program (change connection mode)
Do this while, and before running the NSU app...you will get varying results.

You have no choice but to reinstall that manually now, it is lost.

It appears here in New Zealand, you cannot update the firmware through the phone iself, you have to use the NSU PC app.

Get that program connected and running possibly using the un-orthodox methods explained above, and it will update you from v10 to v11

I don't think it should...which reset method did you use, and did you forma the Mass Memory during he process?

There are two reset methods....
One wipes the rubbish and reinstates the phone back to a 'as new' state, with your network provider and lates firmware left intact, the other method wipes everything.

When all else fails...I would recommend just starting afresh again...
1) Format the Mass Memory drive to get rid of previously installed apps and rubbish, ensuring a clean slate...
2) Reset he phone again, using the code: (spel here as cannot normally publich this reset code on this forum, it prevents it as 'bad words')

Hopefully you will have a fully working, fast N97.

Hey guys,

I have been trying out the camera on the N97 and there is one important thing that all users should do prior to shooting indoors or in darker conditions - set it to night mode!

It makes one hellova difference. The photo quality is amazing, alot better than the N95. If you leave it on auto, the photos will turn out white-ish.

Hello everyone. im new to these forums....I recently bought the Nokia N97. I wanted to know if anyone can help with a problem i am having. I want to connect the phone to a hand free kit original that came pre-installed in a Toyota Prado. The phone was bought in Dubai last week, fully in English, and the SUV is approximately 1 year old. I tried to connect it already but i was not connecting. Does this mean i have to buy a Nokia hands-free kit or is there some way to make this work. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

No you dont need a nokia kit, any standard bluetooth hands free will work, i currently use a parrot 6000mk kit and it works fine.

Make sure your phone is set to discoverable, remote sim on. Then turn key so car comes on, search for carkit on N97, enter 0000 password. When connected, set carkit to authorised so it automaticly connects.

If this does not work, consult car manual for different pass code? Otherwise go see a Toyota dealer.

Well I did the full reset/format mass memory/reset again and reinstall everything over the weekend. With everything now reinstalled I have 53.2mb available on the phone memory (up from 25mb or so) and everything running well!

The Phone Memory Update has also finally managed to install successfully - although it previously told me it had installed it was not available to uninstall (and now is) and kept reappearing in the list of Updates to apply (which it now doesn't).

The issue that tipped me over the edge and got me to do the full reset was some photo's I took would not appear in the Photo Viewer (either in Captured or Downloaded), the only way to see them was through the file manager, so time will tell whether this problem resurfaces.

The N97 isn't listed but I installed the 5800 Music app and it works perfectly.
