Introduction:
This thread, is to discuss the features and services provided within, and for, the Nokia N97, where to find them, and how to use them.

It is not, for discussing the device release date, or raving how good it is, there are threads already available covering those topics.

If you have any questions or knowledge, such as where to find a particular app, where a certain setting is found, how to use a particular N97 service or feature, or how to modify or personalise something, please ask or post your knowledge here.

Official Updates:
Via NSU or *#0000#:
- Firmware 11.0.021 (previous version 10.0.0.12)
Via SW update:
- Maps 3.1 - the latest version of Ovi Maps. This replaces Nokia Maps 2.0 that shipped with the device.
- N97 C: Phone memory update - a helper application to free space on the internal memory drive.
- N-Gage application 1.3 - adds the N-Gage games service to the Nokia N97.
- Ovi Contacts 1.2 - adds the Ovi Contacts/Chat service, this is Nokia's presence and IM service.
- Nokia Messaging 10.0 - adds the Nokia Messaging service (consumer push email) to the N97, which can be used to replace the email functions of the Messaging application.

Update methods:
- NSU (Nokia Software Updater - PC application)
- SW update (updates the included Nokia software)
- *#0000# - options - check for updates (updates the firmware)

Other Codes:
- *#06# displays the IMEI the serial number of your phone
- *#0000# displays the firmware and its date
- *#92702689# (*#war_anty) displays the “warranty-menu” of your phone.
- *#2820# (*#bta_#) displays the bluetooth-address of your device.
- *#62209526# (*#mac_wlan#) displays the MAC-address of your phone it works just for the Wifi phones.
- Holding # for three seconds on the home screen you change the active profile to silent or back.
- By pressing 0 (zero) for three seconds on the home-screen you easily can open the web browser.
- By pressing the Menu/Home key for three seconds you open the task manager, which shows all opened applications.

Known Bugs/Omissions/Issues:
- Homepage connectivity settings not available to edit in Connectivity menu
- Widgets/apps that connect to the internet bu have no editable connectivty settings cause issues
- Lack off codec support (divx/avi etc)
- Facebook widget/app buggy, will not open at times

Proud to be part of the club.

I would like to know how the N97 sets up its folders on the memory card as well as on the mass memory. For example, where should I store videos, photos and documents if I drag them off the computer onto the memory card and / or the mass memory?

For Documents I would store them in a Documents folder (if there isn't one created you can create one yourself) QuickOffice will do a scan of your memory and recall where these files are stored.

For Videos these will be seen within the Photos application although the Video Application should in theory see these also, there is a Videos folder already on the Mass Storage Memory.

Photos I store in the Images Folder, the application will store any photos you take within this folder also, they will also be within that folder within another folder that is month stamped, a new month, a new folder is created.

You shouldn't have a problem having replicate folders on an external memory card, the phone will find those also.

Thanks BrentR for clearing things up. Good to know the phone will do a scan for the appropriate files as needed.

I am still waiting for the v11 firmware. My phone's from Asia.

Ok guys another question - regarding wifi and using Vodafone data.

I have set the connectivity priorities -
1) Home wifi
2) Vodafone internet

Yet, everytime I go into the Facebook widget it immediately uses the second priority, even though I am connected to wifi. Any ideas?

I have read (in many recent blogs) that the v11 firmware has been released to select countries at first, but will have a worldwide release in the coming days...so it is coming

The new version of the N97 firmware is already available in several countries with worldwide availability coming in the following days. So if you are a proud owner of a shiny N97 you might check out if it's already available for you.

There really needs to be a settings section specifically for the widgets/home screen...

I have been geting a variety of connection methods thrown up, the phone trying to connect via wifi every 10 seconds, even though I have said No.
But I am still sussing it out....

What I am wondering though...is how can I tell how much wifi data, and how much network data I have used....I have been surfing the internet using the nework...and I'm waiting for a Vodafone txt sating 'You have used 80% of your 10MB daily allowance'....etc etc....

Used to get that txt on my Samsung...will I still get that warning on this imported mobile?

In terms of data used...I am wondering how much these widgets actually use, in the course of a day?

Totally agree. Hope something is done in the v11 firmware. It's a pain in the butt!

Yes I can confirm it works on parallel imported phones. I used to get these texts on my Asian N95.

In terms of data used...I am wondering how much these widgets actually use, in the course of a day?

Hmmm not sure but you can find out how much data you have used in overall on your device by going over to Apps - Log - Pocket Data.

Not yet, I have been checking daily. The only thing I am unhappy about is the screen not lighting up sometimes when you unlock the device (which is fixed in v11) and the connection confusion.

Seriously, Nokia should create an option for the user to select which access point to use for each and every application.

I have noticed that if you choose "default connection" it usually uses the one that is active at the time.

Today my device actually asked me what kind of connection I would like to use - it was in the priority of my setup. Hmm, perhaps the device does have this "what connection would you like to use" but it is just not showing all the time due to firmware bugs.

I find the internet connection manager quite frustrating...

In 'Connectivity'...'Destinations'...'Internet'....I have 3 access point, set as the following:
Priority. 1: Home wifi
Priority. 2: VF NZ Internet
Priority. 3: Boingo

In theroy...whenever I am at home and in range of my home wifi, it should connect automtacially, and all internet should use my wifi connection...

When I am out of range, it should then automatically go to the next in the priority list, VF, and use that for internet....(the same rule should apply for internet browsing and the home screen widgets)

But this is not happening.

I just keep getting an error messages saying 'no wifi available'...or 'loss of packet data'
I will take note of and post the exact errors later, so maybe we can get to the bottom of it all.

Every now and again, a option sceen will pop up giving me a choive of using my home wifi, or VF (even though out of range of homw wifi)....his then enables me to connect to VF again....but this does not happen all the time...

And that pop up should not be neccesary anyway...the connection manager should automatically recognise my preferences...and use the most preferable first, and if that is not available, then automatically connect to the next preferable.

Sigh.

Its a great device...I do love it...but its just like a computer...much learning and bugs to sort out.

Hmmm just noticed that for me to see all roads and maps on Nokia Maps I need to say yes to "Do you want to go online". I thought all maps are stored on the phone's memory?

On my N95 the maps are viewable no matter if I am online or not.

Anyone have a clue?

I would have thought they are....I just updated to Maps v3.0....300MB download...quite an install.

I have just updated to v11, and have noticed already better stability...have yet to fully test networking with this new firmware...I had to use NSU to get it too.

I have made one small sutile change to my networking preferences, to see how he device responds...

In Destinations, Internet, I still have my 3 access points, and in the same priority, home wifi 1st, VF 2nd and Boingo 3rd...but in the VF settings, I changed the 'Use access point' setting from the default of 'Automatically', to 'After confirmaion'.....hopefully this will through up more connection option popups...and warn that I am about to connect via VF...

I may also change the home wifi to simular, just to test how the device responds, what options it throughs up to connect, and when...

I must say, I am now really geting into this device, love it....I have updated the very first post in this thread, to list all known compatiable Aps and known bugs, and will update it reguarlly.

My 1 biggest gripe though...and I don't know if it can be fixed...is the lack of ability to play divx movies. (properly without stuttering)

Another thing I do not like...

Videos...should be stored in the video folder, easily found using the video Ap...
Photos...should be stored in the photos folder, easilt founnd using the photo browser Ap

This is not the case...

Some videos are found using the photo Ap
Some videos, can not be found at all.

In particular, recorded videos are not found in either the video Ap nor the Photos Ap...the only place I can find them is in the Real Player Ap, 'recently played'...or using the File Manager, in the 'Video Clips' folder, 'Camera' folder.....

Its just not logical, and its certainly not convieniant or user freindly.
