You shouldn't need *any* software, unless you want to "sync" content.

I don't have any software installed. I plug my handset and it shows up as a storage device. I copy stuff to and from. And that's it. All I need.

Yes that's a good point Mauricio.

If you're trying to get the big high megapixel photos off the phone, you should just be able to plug it in and see the content in File Explorer

Note that cameras of this type need a pattern or something contrasty to focus on. If you point it at something featureless then it will have trouble.

You shouldn't need any apps installed. The phone should just show up as a device in Explorer and let you browse the media and document folders.

I don't use any of the apps and I don't sync anything. Everything goes to Skydrive/Live/WindowsPhone.com and the whole idea of syncing music and files and contacts etc is gone... thankfully.

Once in a while I'll plug it into the PC and clear out the images folder to have a local copy as well as the ones on SkyDrive. However that will change a little with the 1020 because I will be pulling the high res files off the phone.

I'd be very interested in seeing some images from other 1020 owners to compare and use in the next video.

Drop me a note through my profile and I'll send my email address - Or put a couple of your low-res/high-res image pairs on your SkyDrive and share them here.

I'm particularly keen to see sunny-day cityscapes, such as a hillside full of buildings or houses going to the edge of the frame, and without anything close to throw the focus off.

Hold the camera dead steady or hold it against something stable (don't scratch the body) and use default settings.

That would be very much appreciated and will make the video more interesting!

Hopefully not stating the obvious but Make sure your phone is unlocked (as in not requiring a password to unlock it) when it is plugged in to your computer. This small detail had me stumped for hours one day early in my Windows Phone ownership - but it is perfectly logical when you think about it.

wow wow I have to acknowledge that I connected the Mini usb that the phone came with and it connected easily. Partners vista also connected after a bit more time finding drivers.
Here is me thinking that all mini usb would connect.
How common is this problem

I've found a few micro usb cables that come bundled with stuff to charge it that don't seem to work for data connections.  I assume they just put in the power pins, and none of the others to save a few cents.   I'd be surprised if nokia had done that with the bundled micro-usb cable though.  (I've not actually tried mine as I have a bunch of them around anyway)

I throw out any that can't be used as a data connection as it's just a frustration.

I don't know if it matters but my Win8 login matches my WP8 login.. perhaps there's some security around plugging the phone into just any PC.. would be the first I've heard of it though.

Pretty common. As noted above some cheap USB cables are for charging only, it seems.

There's currently no security linkage between Microsoft Accounts across Win8 and WP8
