What version of the firmware are you using? The latest, ver12, has enhanced GPS ability.
Make sure you have the slider open to expose the keypad and put your phone outside facing a clear view of the northern sky. With the Maps app running and showing satellite info, you will see when you have a lock once the bars turn black, you should be getting at least four bars. This could take a long time, 20 minutes maybe? Go have a coffee :-)
Once the GPS has aquired lock, subsequent lock times will be much faster, typically 1.5 minutes.

Thankyou very much peejayw, this is quite a bit of work on your behalf for the N95 community here. I had been looking into the stored maps option for MGMaps, but medical school really wasn't permitting me enough time to sort though it.

I'm avidly awaiting the maps with Level 16 zoom.

Prob pone of those noob questions again!!

Once you have downloaded the Peejays latest maps version on your sd card, I assume there wont be quite so much requirement for data transferring on the gprs/umts networks??

With MGMap software set to offline mode and converting/downloading google maps you don't ever need to use GPRS for map downloading. I live just north of CHCH and have the entire south island down to street level on my N95.

Thanks for that-thats what I thought.
Seeing you already have peejays maps installed on memory card no need for data transfer

Nobody- It taskes some time for the satelites on their 1st fix.
Strand outside in an open area and wait several minutes-the bars do go black

Shouldn't even take that long on the V12 firmware. . .

Incidentally, make sure the slide is open (portait position, not landscape), that there is a clear view to the sky, ideally in with no high neighbouring buildings and little cloud cover. These things will all assist in the speed of the GPS lock. I've never had it take longer than a couple of minutes, even from a cold start.

New problem is that the light on my keypad sometimes dont work (sometimes works sometimes don't)
Anyone else experiencing similar problems?

This is correct from what I know - the phone uses the light sensor on the front to determine whether the keypad should be backlit? I've had no problems at any rate.
