GeorgeNZ: Well after coming to smart phones using android (Samsung) over the last 3 or 4 years and then changing to a Lumia 1020 last week I must admit that that first evening I was wondering if I had made a mistake. A few days later I still notice the odd thing that had become ingrained in my 'actions' that I miss, or at least if feels like I miss but the reality is it is like any change and these moments decrease.
I was never interested in 'rooting' my phone or constantly fiddling round with set ups or new launchers or keyboards, I just wanted it to work. My WP just works and it works well, and there are a number of features I prefer. I think that there will be always areas of functionality where one OS is better than another but I think with updates those are diminishing till the differences just amount to different philosophies rather than deficiencies.
5 days in and a couple or resets just to start over afresh and I am happy with the decision to change. I have totally departed from the Googlesphere and no longer have a Google account, and to date do not miss it nor have found anywhere I am at a disadvantage.
I am just finding (as I always felt) that Windows mobile, like Window OS just works and works (so far) well.

Abo: One thing that Microsoft/Nokia really needs to sort out is the system updates.
They need to start following the Google Nexus/iOS model of updating and make the system updates carrier independent so people get them faster. Good example is fragmentation of android - waiting for carriers/manufacturers is proven to fail absolutely.
Hopefully they start going down this path with the release of 8.1 otherwise it'll be getting too difficult to fix as google have found.
There's nothing worse than having to wait weeks after an update is actually released for carriers to cripple and add their bloatware to an image that doesn't need it. (like telecom does)
I'll probably end up getting the developer preview for 8.1 when it comes out otherwise I'll probably be waiting for months for the OTA from carrier.

there has been plenty of discussion on Android updates so I won't bring them up here its just the nature of Android which is used by more manufacturers than IOS and WP. If android has failed absolutely how come the android phones sold outnumber all teh rest, maybe its because most don't actually care about updates therefore nor do they care about IOS or WP updates

Yep. Higher percentage of lower end phones the users just want to talk and text. If Google managed to get the manufacturers to use the same CPU/GPU/SOC chipsets that would help fragmentation a lot. That would remove most or all of the manufacturer holdup, and perhaps that would also allow Telcos an easier trip.

crackrdbycracku: Where Windows Phone is making the most sales is the low end. High end Android is great, low end not so much.
The Lumia 520 is making a name for itself as the best 'it just works' option at the low end.

This is a lot easier said than done. Carriers like to control what goes on their network.
