Thank You for your advice.

Bell Mobility has never provided a ROM update on PPC platform.

This is a company that does not understand the Windows Mobile environment.

I believe they carry the PPC6700 for business customers and provide little or no training to their front line tech support people.

In Canada, when you say wireless data to any of the carriers, the tell you Blackberry is the solution to all your wireless data needs.

I have called Bell Mobility, they have told me the ROM is 3rd party software and I should google it.

If Bell Mobility had a history of releasing ROM updates, I would be patient (if PPC6800 is WM 5, I may keep this device until Canadian carrier releases a WM 6 Professional device supporting a 3G standard).

I am tempted to do upgrade on my own once I have better knowledge, mitigated my risk and have better understanding of future for PPC6800.

if I have all necessary ROM's and have an understanding of what parts of the device are affected by AKU 3.5 ROM update, then, I can make a better decision on updating or not.

Thank You

Dave

Wow! Shocking... The PPC6700 is a product distributed by UTStarcom (previously Audiovox) but the mobile operator still should do the software distribution. I will bring this to someone's attention during the Microsoft MVP Summit this week. Not good...

Thank You for your reply.

I have emailed UTstar to see if they can provide ROM for device if required.

If I decide to update the ROM, 2.11.20 WWE to AKU 3.5, I want to have existing ROM if required.

I was shocked when the Bell Mobility support tech told me to Google the ROM, the other night, another support tech told me that bell Mobility built their own ROM (they may build their extended ROM, not the base ROM).

I do plan, again, to bring this to the attention of Ellen Malcolmson (she is SVP for Customer Support) for all Bell companies.

This will be the 4th issue brought to her office in last 12 month.

I will not share the other horror stories, needles to say, Bell Mobility does not understand WM!!!!!!

If this can filter back to Bell via Microsoft, maybe Bell will smarten up.

Instructions:

http://www.bell.ca/media/en/all_regions/pdf/wireless/Bell_UTStarcom_PPC6700.pdf

Update:

http://www.bell.ca/media/en/all_regions/wireless/APAC_BM_21120.exe

To determine if you need this software upgrade on your device please follow these steps:

On your device, from the "Start" menu click on "Settings", click on the "System" tab and click on the "Device Information" icon. In the "Version" tab, verify the "ExtROM version". If your device indicates 2.11.700 WWE, then you should update your unit. If your device indicates 2.11.710 WWE, then your device does not require the update.

IMPORTANT

Ensure all data on your UTStarcom PPC6700 has been backed up. Upgrading your device will remove all existing data on your device. For more information, please refer to page 64 of your user manual.

DO NOT disconnect your device from your PC during installation.

Thanks for the information. So it seems Bell Mobility does offer an update, it's just badly trained help desk staff then? Don't worry, if this is the case, because there aren't any telco I know that has solved this problem - staff training seems to be the last of their priorities.

Hi Canada4U,

Thank You,

Is this the link to the 2.11.20 WWE ROM?

I did get some clarification today.

The EXT ROM is the Bell Mobility customization. the 2.11.20 WWE is the main ROM, I also understand the PPC6700 radios are part of another ROM.

Based on what was explained to me, the AKU 3.5 is just an update for 2.11.20 WWE only, all the other ROM's will not be affected and the information pertaining to your phone phone number and info like that is hard coded into the device.

If this is 2.11.20 WWE ROM, I want to still wait until I have more news on PPC6800.

Canada4U, are you planning the ROM update?

Golfman you are correct, the ROM upgrade does not affect the Radio ROM or the ExtROM. So if something goes wrong with the upgrade then you can reflash the old ROM with no worries.

Hello:
The instruction pdf tells that it's an update to: 2.11.710 WWE
That is what my phone came with in late December so I wouldn't
mid a full working AKU 3.5 just for the more stable Microsoft bluetooth stack.
That is my only concern.
But I wonder if it even is the stack since my PPC-6700 now stays paired all the time
to the car kit, it only loses the connection to it (while not beeing on a call).
I only have to say to the IHF1000 >connect phone 1< and then after a while it connects.

Brad,

The link to AKU 3.5, is this the ROM that has updated Bluetooth support for A2DP?

Do you have a list of improvements that AKU 3.5 makes.

I know that any PPC device runs faster after a hard reset, are you sure you are getting performance increase beyond just the hard reset?

Do you have a link for all AKU 3.5's?

You are best to stick with the stock ROM and add your add programs instead of having customised ones. The speed increase is not from a hard reset. Boot times is less than half that of 2.2.

Improvements include faster and more reliable. It has A2DP. The new wireless manager is great.

I agree with your assessment that the help desk people from bell mobility are not well trained on Windows Mobile.

I am fortunate to have a contact in Executive Office at Bell that I have emailed. The initial response is that the help desk person I spoke to will be coached and his response was unacceptable.

I am 80% comfortable about completing the upgrade, I enjoy using Bluetooth stereo and believe that the upgrade is worth it.

One question, Brad has indicated that AKU 3.5 will improve performance, has this been your experience or are any performance gains been based on fresh install (clear storage always improves performance)?

Thank You

Dave

The performance increase has nothing to do with that associated with clear storage. Cokemaster and Juha both have AKU 3.5 on their Apaches and have remarked about the general speed increase.

I think Mauricio only has the official update installed.

Hi Everyone,

Thank You for all the input and assistance.

I am still awaiting more information on PPC6800 (it looks like Windows Mobile 5.0 vs Windows Mobile 6).

If it releases with no Windows Mobile 6, I think I will do the AKU 3.5 upgrade.

Based on comments from Brad Stewart, Mauricio and Canada4U (btw Thank You for keeping up on this thread), I have more questions sorry!!!

Brad:

Do you have a list/link on what is updated on Kirwin AKU 3.5 upgrade? I saw comments regarding DUN, what changes does it make to Bluetooth other that A2DP/speed, will it now support hands free profile (I think this is the one missing from current ROM)?

Will I loose X-Modem(this is app that allow you to connect PPC6700 to laptop to use as modem) or is this part of EXT ROM?

If there is a list of what you loose and what you gain, it would be appreciated.

Also, is there a place that has a listing of all AKU 3.5 ROM's and what they have/have not?

Canada4U,

I believe the hands free profile you need to resolve your issue

I did receive an email back from Bell Mobility Office of the Executive agreeing that their technical folks should have been able to show me the link to ext ROM. They also warned that Bell Mobility will not be responsible for support if I have issues which I would expect, you get more support on Windows Mobile from Geekzone, Howard Forums and PPCGeeks!!!!!

Brad if you could reply it would be helpful.

I also have acquired the software to unlock extROM which I may move to miniSD card.

Dave
