I've had a few WPs now, and don't think you can stop it powering on when charging

old3eyes: Anyone know on Lumia 520 how to stop it powering back on again when you plug in the charger??

there is no way to do this on most windows phones, I think some of the htcs do it but the rest switch on when charging

nathan: Market share isn't those companies problem

I guess they are betting on the fact you will change phone OS before you'd leave them as a customer and switch Telco or power company or bank

The Developer team here in NZ is working with all of this brands and we are getting much more traction now we have universal apps that go across phone, tablet, desktop

Not having a go at 2D here but surely for a Telco having apps that supports their full range of smart devices should be on their must do list of priorities? The market share/payback scenario should not even be considered, not having a WP app says to me that they don't see a future in WP so as a consumer why bother?

You can't. This is the norm for all Windows Phone devices.

Possibly more, I hope I'm wrong and some of the above are available, it would be a nice surprise.

To answer the question of the original post...Why won't I try it?

a couple of reasons:

1. I am a completely Apple-integrated household - iPads, iPods, iMac, iPhones, Apple TV etc. Add to this the amount of purchased items from the Apple stores and it's a hard call to move

2. I am happy with what I have.

3. Lack of available accessories (think of the sheer number of gubbins I can buy for my Apples...fabulous from a rabid consumer perspective).

Why WOULD I try Windows? I like the look - I love that (like Apple) there's a solid integration throughout the platforms - phones, tablets, PC's etc.

Personally, I'd love to see the WP world just explode...it'd be great to have three major OSes on an equal footing...would be great for the market.

I am surprised it hasn't gained much traction. As HD just said, its got great integration. And the phones are pretty good, and its a big name brand. Why are the apps so light still? Is it not viable for a dev to be able to code for all 3 OS's? Is it the norm for WP apps to be free, that turns devs off? I know the market share is low, which makes it a lower priority for a dev, but its not like you never see them in the wild.

Bring Authy to Windows Phone and I may reconsider it. I use 2FA in every site I can and Authy makes it easier to have all those tokens stored somewhere making it easier to move from handset to handset. Moving with Authenticator means manually changing all those tokens every time I changed a handset.

Market share is the biggest factor when companies cost up providing an app to each platform. There are still many that build IOS first and then, reluctantly, Android. The best way to get multi-platform apps with the least amount of effort is with the 'build for all 3' strategy, like you mention, using technologies such as PhoneGap/Xamarin. Microsoft is also helping move this strategy towards 'build for all 5' by converging windows, windows phone, xbox so that they can share an appstore.

The managed corporate device abilities of Windows Phone for managed devices got a huge boost from the WP 8.1 release and this should also have a positive impact on market share. The ability to separate/ringfence company and personal apps & data on the phones and do selective-wipe is encouraging adoption amongst companies for both fully managed and BYOD devices. You can use the Microsoft tools (System Center, Microsoft Intune) to manage the phones (as well as windows, osx, etc) or you can use 3rd party MDMs like Airwatch or Mobile Iron.

There are a lot of new OEMs building/planning Windows Phone devices this year - the reference design for OEM plus the fact that the OS is now free on handsets is making an impact here. Existing OEMs, like HTC, can also reuse hardware between WP and Android now as we can see with the new HTC Windows Phone release.

As Windows 8 and Windows 10 take hold, the familiar look and feel of the Windows Phone vs Windows Client OS may also encourage people to try WP.

Lots of things in play to grow the ecosystem, still really need help from all you Windows Phone owners to spread the word and highlight why you like it. Also to keep asking for apps from local companies when you find a gap :-)

Do we ask Microsoft or the local company? Every time I ask Powershop or 2D for instance, I get the "nothing planned at this stage". We've just moved 100 connections to 2D at work, and WP is our standard platform, but still no joy on getting an official app. Some guy did have an unofficial Powershop app, but he stopped updating it :p

Another thing that Microsoft was trying to improve was the availability locally of official accessories for WP. Has there been any progress here?

Definitely ask the local companies - the more enquiries they get the more chance they will listen. At Microsoft we're already pursuing some of the larger local brands to bring out WP apps - but feel free to drop us an emails with details at msdnnz AT microsoft.com and we can add to the list of people to talk to.

Re the accessories, BrentR was working on that so I cant comment other than that I have no info either way.

Sorry about the PS unofficial app... the current one published one works for reading, but not for meter entry. Just struggled/struggling to find the spare time to update it... still on 'to-do' list...

Here's an example that you can't defend: Skype Qik. Skype is a Microsoft company. Skype Qik, according to that blog link "...is available on Android and iPhone and is coming to Windows Phone in the coming months."

And there is the problem. Even Microsoft does it. I wouldn't say "launch on Windows Phone first" becasue they do need a critical mass to get a quick messenger program out of the door and reach millions of people, but they could at least release at the same time as the others.

Make it possible for people to install Windows Phone as a custom rom on their androids, Do this for all major devices like the S3, S4, S5, HTC, etc

There's no Skype Qik on neither NZ or US Windows Phone Store.
