"Official Apps only - Windows Phone not supported." So even though Spark sells Windows Phones, they don't qualify for Socialiser, even with official apps available. Good luck getting people to try WP Microsoft, you've really got your work cut out for you when the NZ telcos aren't interested.

Without any official statement from Spark, I would hazard a guess that Data Sense may be messing with the traffic from each of those sites as it compresses the data each way.

In saying that, it would be good to understand why Spark have that statement when there are official Facebook and Twitter apps on Windows Phone.

the smartphone market was pretty small then, compared to today, and they were getting killed by ios and android so they had to do something. Symbian wasn't winning, meego might have made a difference, but it never happened so you can't really quantify that.

Samsung is reportedly in a spin over falling smartphone profits (a 60% drop?) - that could be have been nokia today (or earlier) if they had gone down that path - or maybe neither would have dominated.

windows phone market share in some markets is significantly higher than the global share, and growing, so windows phone still has a chance :)

You make a good point re increase in market size, however the statistics don't support your theory, at least so far as the Nokia story is concerned. Using your theory Nokia should be sitting on at least 6% market share if they had continued to sell the same number of units.

In 2010 Nokia sold just over 460,000,000 smartphones in 2013 they sold just over 250,000,000 smartphones. They have shed big numbers since the introdctuion of WP.

Can anyone explain why Microsoft have released a bunch of cool garage apps, but not made them available in all app stores? Honestly not sure if they know countries outside the US exist sometimes. Tetra lockscreen is one, Sound stack sounds great. Also some games and other interesting apps.

Even Microsofts own RDP app, using the Microsoft proprietary RDP protocol came to IOS and Android first.

I am sticking with Windows phone now because I don't like the way Google is going and I can't afford and don't like Apple. Honestly, if cool hardware is ever released with Ubuntu on it, I would probably grab one. Even Jolla and sailfish grab me, but a complete lack of available hardware here and hardware specs that are decidedly low end make it a hard sell.

Well I was in Harvey Norman on Saturday and looking at phones, and a customer came up to me and asked what the difference was between the 925 and the 1020 (I don't work at HN)so I explained the differences to them, and they told me they don't want an Android or Apple phone, but want Windows phone only. So I told them to hold off as the 830 will be coming out soon, and gave them all the specs of the 830. One of the reasons they want a windows phone is due to the camera, they didn't care about the apps, which I told them are increasing all the time. So they went away, without purchasing a 1020 or 925 (Sorry HN) but they are going to pick up an 830 when released. So people are keen on trying it. I just hope Microsoft advertises it well. Oh and I will be getting the 830 too.

If their only interest was the camera (as was mine) why would you discourage the 1020?

The 830 seems a fairly innocuous handset, and would compare well with any other, but its no 1020.

I tend to agree. I've been watching Jolla and would shell out the dosh to buy buy and import one to have a play if it worked on Spark. Unfortunately they don't support Spark frequencies.

Spark has no idea what they are talking about. I'm using Facebook Beta on a Lumia 920. From my Spark account page I can see about 30 megs of data has been registered under Socialiser.

When I was first looking at a smart phone I was waiting for the Palm Pre to come out in New Zealand. I was sure Web OS was going to be the best.
The iPhone had been out for a while and Android was making waves, but I was determined to wait for my next Palm device (I has a Tungsten C at the time).

Now as we all know the Pre failed, but a friend of mine gave me an old 2G iPhone with a damaged screen and said if I could fix it I could keep it, so I did.
I then found I liked it, it just worked, great, I'll use it for a while and see what else comes out.
I got a hold of an Android device - 1.6, it sucked, really bad. Resistive screen, slow, just really bad. Got rid of it.

I upgraded the iPhone to a 3G and liked it, then to a 3GS, then bought a brand new 4S -Awesome little phone.
Now for work I had a dumb phone, I liked the iPhone, but couldn't convince work to get an iPhone, so I bought an Android Samsung Galaxy II, that was a good phone, but as a direct competitor to the 4S it didn't compare for me, even with the latest version of Android I could get for it (not a sammy version of Android) it just felt awkward to use and trying to find settings for things is kinda nuts, but to be honest IOS isn't that obvious all the time either.
I now find myself waiting for my new iPhone 6+ to turn up.

Why did I type this long message? You'll notice windows never came up in the phone history for me, they were too late coming to the game for me.
I have now got a vested interest in the Apple ecosystem, I have apps and devices that I like to use and have paid good money for, and I'm not going to drop thousands of dollars of investment just to try something different.

I have colleagues at work that have a variety of smart phones, it's about 50/50 IOS/Android and one Windows phone user.

The most ironic thing here is that the friend that originally got me into iPhones, now loves his Samsung Android phone, we have each other on about it, but we both agree on what works for us is different.

I'm really enjoying Windows Phone. I was still using a basic "dumb" phone up until Xmas 2013. I was never a big phone user and didn't really have any desire to use different apps or have a camera on my phone when I had a good digital camera. "I can cope without having access to Facebook on the 25 minute bus ride to and from work" was my usual reason for not wanting to spend the money on one. Then I unexpectedly won a Lumia 520 from Vodafone just prior to Xmas last year (from their daily advent calendar competition). Having not had a smartphone before I had no strong connection to IOS or Android. I had barely used IOS other than the odd play in stores although I had played around with Android a bit more as my partner had an android phone.

Despite any previous opposition to having a smartphone I've found it really good to be able to check news, emails or even Facebook while on the bus or out having lunch etc. Also really useful to be able to check banking when out without having to get to a bank or computer (it's actually saved me a few times from making purchases without enough funds in the Eftpos account!).

Really liking Windows too, especially with the recent 8.1 update so I see no reason to switch when this phone eventually packs up and needs to be replaced. I imagine I'll just get the equivalent model when that time comes. I've not come across anything major that I haven't been able to do with it that I could do on Apple or Android, although as I'm, still not a really big user maybe others could find things. Sometimes there's an app that's not available for Windows but nothing deal breaking for me yet.

I don't know, the 1020 has its plus and minuses. Sure it has a 41MP camera, but megapixels mean nothing really. Its also dual core vs quad, no MicroSD slot, a 2000 mAh battery vs 2200.
And I believe the 830 will cost less than the 1020 which still sells for around $699.
