Has anyone ever unlocked an AT&T phone for use in NZ?

Normally I wouldn't bother, but for $550 NZD I can get an off-contract 920 with a charging plate and a monster headset. My guess is the headset and charger will probably retail for about $250 NZD, so it's a big saving... mainly I just want a different colour.

I got my LG c900 Quantum from AT&T and unlocked it here and it works no problem, but I had to set up the mms settings as they were wrong. I dont know if anyone here can unlock Lumia 920's yet but fire some of these unlock companies an email and they will let you know.

Just be aware that AT&T phones are slightly different and have different firmware... not that its a big deal in most cases but the rest of the world do get one phone and AT&T and Rogers get a different one. Not sure what the differences will be on this one... 4G frequencies maybe?

I got a "hands on" with one last week and the screen on the 820 is miles behind the 920 and 8X. Personally, I would not buy it just because of that.

400 x 800 AMOLED on the 820 vs the 720 x 1280 LCD on the 8X (and higher on the 920)...

Telecom have the 8S coming on the 6th December. No front facing camera and only a 4" screen... Does have expandable memory.

I've heard nothing but good things about the 820 screen, not that its as good as the 920 but good notheless and most people thought the screen was not a let down on the phone despite the specs.

Anyway, I know Vodafone are lining up the 820 but no idea when. I dont think Telecom are getting it at this stage.

I think there is a bit of "its Nokia, it cant be bad" in peoples reviews. I can tell you now, if you have seen or used a phone that had a 720p (or better) display resolution the quality of the Lumia 820s screen is easily noticeable and is an issue. If you were upgrading from the Lumia 800 for some reason the screen on the Lumia 820 looks so much better (for the same resolution and lower pixel density). Odd.

Installed the Windows Phone application for Windows 7 last night. The use of lists/checkboxes to select what is synchronised to the phone from your library is good, but seriously, this applications is not nearly as polished as the Zune applications is.

Having said that, transfer of 10GB of photos and music from my laptop to the phone was really fast. None of the album covers was tranferred though.

I would really like the ability of a "remote administration" tool so that I could change phone settings from my desktop if they are connected.

Yeah most of the reviews I read went along the lines of "we were expecting the screen to be crap but were pleasantly suprised" sort of thing. But I hear what you're saying about it compared to the 720p phones its not even gonna be in the same ballpark.

And they removed Wireless Sync from Windows Phone application. Damn, Microsoft always remove the good stuff.

My vote was for blue or yellow.

Reason why as these goes with more colours for the tiles, i.e. yellow and green goes nice together, red on the other hand does not go with that many colours (unless its xmas then red and green are nice).

This is maybe true but the Telecom phone will only be limited by the firmware as it is still the worldwide hardware model and is just a firmware change away from having all bands. Whereas the AT&T (and Rogers) hardware model only has AT&T and Rogers firmware so you are stuck with those bands/offerings.

Interesting to note is that Rogers lists this on their site:

GSM/EDGE Bands: 850/900/1800/1900
HSPA+/HSPA Bands: 850/900/1700/1900/2100
LTE Bands: 700/850/1900/1700/2100

Note that the Win 8 Metro version of this app is much prettier with thumbnails etc. and will suit most people. I think the desktop app looks good for people copying bulk files across.

And also different in WP8 is that the phone libraries can now be accessed through Windows Explorer and also other apps such as Windows Media Player. With WMP you can drag and sync playlists and albums and individual songs same as in the old days.

It may be the case that different sync methods sync different amounts of meta information; not sure on that one?

Personally, I'm going to move away from syncing any of my desktop music at all, and am only going to put music on the phone directly through the device itself, via the Xbox pass. It doesn't have everything, but it has a lot more than I have at home.

And documents are only going to be synced through Skydrive as that keeps it all in sync without any effort and without copying files around manually.

Win8/WP8 are definitely an opportunity to break habits and change they way one works with files; and so far it's looking better for me.

I have all My Documents in Skydrive, but syncing between laptop and cloud. Would love to go full cloud, but really, can't see this happening until we have pervasive, cheaper 3G and laptop with built-in 3G modems...
