billbennett: Thanks, this is what I was looking for when I asked about the charger.
So, should I spring for the official Nokia USB charger or rock off to Jaycar or somewhere looking for a generic 1A charger? What would you do?

freitasm: As I said I use other chargers I have here - a Logitech, a Motorola, a HTC. I didn't even unpack my Nokia charger.
Sure, a cheap $5 charger at DSE might not meet the requirements - read the specifications before buying. But you don't have to buy a Nokia one.

coddy: I grabbed both to be safe. Because Nokia are closing access to their firmware servers at the end of this month, it seemed prudent to get the 1232.2109.1242.1005 (Original) image as well as the updated
1232.5951.1249.1006 image just in case something like this happens and Nokia decides to pull the not released image and rebuild it after access to their servers has been closed, which would probably leave those that have upgraded stuck.

I am still kind of annoyed that they've decided to lock off their servers so now we're at the mercy of the carrier so if our phone goes 'poof' we can't get a replacement then and there at the shop. Honestly, I swear some companies like Nokia have no clue as to how dependent users are today on their mobile phones and how 'three week' repair periods with no replacement is completely unacceptable.

That's the problem of being at the end of the world with comparatively a very small user base. It's not worth having a full service service centre here in New Zealand for many manufacturers. I don't know if this applies to Nokia but wouldn't be surprised.

Many of these issues could be resolved if they allowed customers to conduct a full recovery just as Apple, via iTunes, allows individuals to resurrect their bricked device. My gripe is that if they're going to block off the ability for individuals to recover their devices at home then they should jolly well ensure that if we're forced to go into a shop that we're not forced again to wait three weeks for the phone to be repair. At this point I regret buying a Nokia device after seeing what their attitude is really like.

Can't disagree re owner being allowed or able to restore or recover their device. This makes perfect sense.
Having said that I've not had to recover any of the Nokia's we have owned so it's never been a problem for me. I'm not aware of there being a real need for owners to have to do recoveries on Nokia phones in the past however my experience is with Symbian and WP may well be different.
Since it's not been a a major problem in the past may explain Nokia's attitude to this issue. Waiting 3 weeks isn't all that flash if there is problems like you are afraid of, perhaps there won't be any issues like this to be worried about.
