s.joseph: I fixed my 3g problem by going into field test mode ( in the dialler type ##3282#) then go into settings eg. the 3 dots in the bottom corner and then select 3g only under network

Thank you! You are awesome!!! I wonder why the phone does that though if 3G is available..?

This is not how you fix the problem. I have this set to 3G only on my Lumia 920 because Telecom is 100% 3G and having 2G enabled is a waste of battery.

Vodafone (and 2degrees) are a mix and match of 2G (old technology) and 3G (newer technology). The coverage is not the same. In some areas you will see both 2G and 3G coverage, but in other areas it will be only 2G or 3G not both.

If you set your phone to 3G only and use it on Vodafone then when you are out of 3G area you will not have any service. This means the effective coverage will be reduced.

Likely the 3G signal fluctuates a lot in some areas and the phone is latching to the one that is stronger for longer.

This is because constant searching for signal and switching uses more battery than having only one setting.

I suggest you check coverage and performance in the area. Different devices have different radio performance and might see the network in different ways. Also note that the Fast Dormancy setting is different on Telecom and Vodafone, which means using a device from one network in another will cause an increase in battery usage.

Use at your discretion.

I completely agree but I'm mainly in town where there is always 3g coverage but for some reason even though I've set preferred as 3g it sticks to 2g only. So for me this fix is ok, but silly if you aren't in 3g coverage all the time.

Settings > Mobile Network > [Highest Connection Speed] is not setting "3G only" or "2G only". It does exactly what it says, setting the highest speed connection the phone will use. Basically it's "2G only" and "2G or 3G whatever is available".

The maint menu option is the only one that limits what kinds of service/band the radio uses.

Update on the DRM issue. A Full Reset of the phone later and it all works again. Frustrating! I've reconnect with the Windows 8 Metro Sync app and renamed the phone again and it all still works so they only thing I can think that caused this was the change from the 1 month trial to being a paid member. Hopefully when it rolls over again next month it doesn't go and destroy all my downloaded media again.

On the 3G/2G thing i'm on Vodafone in Hamilton and it seems pretty constant on 3G. I have on occasion seen it briefly flick to H and H+ but it never stays up for long so no idea what is going on there.

Have just loaded up some music onto my phone, the windows app/itunes integration sure makes it easy, open itunes, create playlist, import playlist via windows phone app, 5 minutes later 10GB of music on the phone and I'm happily listening to music

For an out of the box experience the standard headphones sound most pleasant, compared to the S3 and it's included headphones the nokia is a heads up winner

Let me know if it all of a sudden stops again. My free trial still has about 3 weeks to go and I may decide to try a hard reset if no news of a patch turns up by then.

s.joseph: Anyone using there telecom branded Lumia on 2degrees. I'm having odd issues where the internet works on explorer 10 but not in apps such as Facebook or the store? I've changed the apn so not sure what's happening?

Hi,

Make sure you use the following settings.

Under Mobile Network Settings > Edit Internet APN > APN. Enter in the word ( internet ) without the brackets and save.

Be interested to hear it, the N8 and 808 have very nice headphone outputs, but I don't expect the experience to translate so well to the 920 since it'll be using the S4s DAC, which is rather pedestrian. Be interested to do a blind test between S3 and Lumia, suspect most of the difference will be accounted for only by the volume level, and volume-matched the S3 will probably actually sound better. Implementation counts for a lot though, so entirely possible the 920 does in fact sound better.

Not much point adjudicating their respective sound qualities from the included buds though from my point of view, anyone who really cares enough to ask about sound quality is unlikely to be using included buds (although I appreciate many casual listeners will find that a useful metric).

On the Xbox Music Pass DRM issue...

Good news - Today my phone seems to be fine again.. just out of the blue. I can download music through the store on the phone and it plays back without complaining about rights management.

Nothing changed since yesterday at this end, so I'm assuming something has changed further up the system.

Is the issue also prevalent when connected via wifi?
