Well, decided to do my first bit of phone flashing since I went with Windows phone 3+ years ago. Followed the guide here to flash GDR2 and a CSC pack containing the ATO zone onto my phone. Started it up, connected to wifi, an hour or so later and my phone is on official windows phone 8.1.1. Runs very well so far, no showstopper issues thus far.
It has a bit weirdness around timezones setting to kamchatka automatically but setting manually to GMT+12 Auckland has sorted that. In the SIM settings it says I have no MMS APN, but in the Samsung additional setting for APN's it does have an MMS APN. Also MMS works fine. Camera is perfect. Everything else seems to be working just fine. Not sure it was worth losing my NZC CSC as that may have helped with the timezone weirdness, but very happy with how smooth it is and how well it all works.

I didnt flash or at least via flashing tools etc, like you i just changed the CSC to ATC (austria :D) which updated my phone to GDR3...added new functionality as you know..especially like the screen rotation on/off and phone storage updates.
However it also changed my cell provider information and even when I changed the APN etc to Telecom still acted up. Phoned acted up in minor ways mainly when sms(ing) - inconsistently.....occasionally rectified by reboot.
So I changed the CSC to NZC (telecom) and reset the phone, noted with interested that GDR3 update was still present (I guess the bios etc was flashed). However it was now 2 degrees haha, however have learned that telecom and 2 degrees share the same.
Change the APN to telecom...phone settled back down and it has not acted up since.
GDR3 did seem to make my phone over heat (I dont remember it doing so under GDR2) under stess while intensively playing games - temple run/angry birds.
Was just going to put that same here about the three weeks till it rolls out here. They were correct before with mid October for a release and so hopefully they are correct again. I think I will probably revert back to GDR3 with NZC as my CSC when they release it so I can do the proper update for my CSC. May help with some of the daft auto country settings and with a couple of APN issues needing to be manually put in. Overall though very happy with 8.1. It is a very good solid update.
I am only guessing, but there is TNZ, VNZ and NZC so I think TNZ is probably Telecom, VNZ is probably Vodafone and NZC is probably 2 Degrees.
I think GDR3 did have some issues for certain phones which is why they didn't roll it out everywhere, Mine was generally better except for bluetooth.

Nope, flashed GDR2 with a different CSC pack that included ATO which then updated to official 8.1.1 now. When they release 8.1.1 officially here, I think I will flash it back with the proper NZC CSC and update from there. I think that will fix some niggly issues. Only one zone has got the updates so far, ATO, every other zone is still waiting, so three weeks is probably pretty good.

Slightly OT, but yes - Samsung's three NZ CSC identifiers do indeed correspond to the three network operators - VNZ for Vodafone NZ, TNZ for Telecom NZ/Spark, and NZC for New Zealand Communications/2degrees. 2d's interesting history means there's a few fun holdovers from when they had different names and number ranges (e.g. the MNC/Mobile Network Code for 2d is '24' because their number range was originally intended to be 024 instead of 022). The more you know. :)
Good news for Samsung ATIV S users as the handsets are reportedly receiving a large update today: Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1.
While many of us are already running the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile OS, either thanks to regular updates or the Preview program, some users are still stuck on previous version. In fact, more than 36% of users are still running Windows Phone 8.0.
Luckily, ATIV S users will no longer be part of that statistic as many reports are coming in from different parts of Europe, where unbranded Samsung devices are now receiving the WP 8.1 update.
"Owners of the Ativ S in both Italy and Germany have reported getting asked to perform the update. Furthermore, Samsung confirmed the rollout for unbranded units sold in Italy, so other European countries should see it pretty soon, we assume"
Yep, looks promising for a good rollout for the ativ S. Really regretting not waiting and flashing a rom and CSC just to get 8.1. Doesn't seem to be a reversible decision as I had hoped as the phone is no longer picked up in the download tool. Just a few little things like timezones being weird, but still wish I had been a bit more patient.

Managed to finally get the phone to recognise in the flashing tool so I am back on GDR3 with NZC as my csc. Will just wait for now. If you are happy to change CSC's again, try NEE as it is currently rolling out there. If it takes too long to get in the NZ region, I may force it through changing CSC's again, at least I can still easily go back to my correct CSC if I upgrade that way.
