motorwayne: The instalation of the ATT ROM is via your mini SD card...so if you don't like it or it sucks, all you need to do is do a hard reset without the mini SD card in and you're back to the old WM5 aren't you?

The installation is from the miniSD card, but it's flashing the ROM, so if you hard reset the device it will still boot Windows Mobile 6 AT&T.

So, it all happens. Palm will be announcing Windows Mobile 6 for Palm Treo 750 (note, not Treo 750v) in Australia, during the Tech Ed Australia 2007, next week.

Read more on Long's blog - I've just been talking to him over MSN now. Nothing in New Zealand, but we here don't have the vanilla 750, we have the 750v...

Arghhhh.

Actually it's interesting, because Long (who I met before in Las Vegas during the International CES 2007 as we both attended the Microsoft Vista Labs before the release) told me he was actually asked by the PR folks to post this...

Spot on! You can't go back unless you have a copy of the original ROM!

Yep, MS PR people. Mind you "PR People" != "MS People".

well it just got easier for me to wait for the vodafone update..... my treo has to go in for repairs as the "e" key is permanently depressed.  The "e" key also happens to be te "1" key (hello, would you like fire, ambulance or police?).  I've only had the damn thing a month and its already broke :(

I'll be at TechEd in Australia next week so I'll get a chance to take a look at the official WM6 ROM.

Dumb newbie question (I love my Palm 750v) - what will be so great about WM6 (for the average user, and not the uber geek). Innocent

heres a few of the things that I know are new in wm6:

* Can read HTML emails
* New email search features
* New Internet Explorer - much better at rendering pages
* New Windows Live Messenger - i *hope* it comes on the Treo.....!
* Internet Sharing - can share the 3G internet connection on Treo with PC over bluetooth and still use the treo for phone/internet

oh, and some new visuals for the interface....

The new e-mail search feature requires Exchange Server 2007 to work. It allows you to search on e-mails - even those not stored on your device.

The Windows Live Messenger is a bit of a shame. I have been in the beta of Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 6 and some of the bits and pieces between. Windows Live Messenger as it is deployed with Windows Mobile 6 will merge your Hotmail contacts with your Outlook, trying to create a single contact list. A bit of pain because Messenger contacts don't have real names, the e-mail address is not used for communications, only for messenger, a total mess.

And if you delete the contacts from Outlook after the "merge", the Windows Live Messenger client will then delete from your Messenger list!

The sad thing is, with this version you can not use Windows Live Messenger Mobile if not "merging" the contacts. And this is a pain, for example for users on an Exchange Server, who want to keep business contacts separate from Messenger contacts.

Lucky enough there are some changes in the horizon, and a new version keep those separate - but as usual I am not sure Microsoft would distribute this, because operators "help" us by removing features, delaying updates, and other things that make them a pain.

My suggestion? If you want to keep your Outlook contacts separate, use a different Messenger client. Use Fring for example.

Yes but there is also a new "search" function called "smartfilter" which you can use (without needing Exchange 2007) to find mobiles on your device.  this is a welcome addition as scrolling for an email looking at only subject/sender/date is not an easy way to find something
