NZ255: What do you do when you break the screen? Does the place of purchase do anything?

Repair i suppose?

I doubt it.  It was an accident, so insurance. :)

DuncanMcC: I dropped my phone yesterday and broke the "Gorilla" glass.

Don't believe all the vids folk - it's crap. They break quite easily! :(

(No phone until the assesment's completed tomorrow. Amazing how naked one feels without a phone! :) )

I don't think it's fair to say it breaks easily.

Gorilla glass is just marketing, yes it's tougher and scratch resistant but it's still glass that can smash

Your cheapest bet will be to buy a replacement screen off eBay and replace yourself. I bet getting it done here in NZ will run into hundreds of dollars

Definitely worthwhile taking phone insurance or getting it added to contents insurance

You've misquoted me, I said it breaks quite easily.  And they clearly do - dropped from my hand height (arms down) to the ground - not much more than two feet.

PS: the repair dude, prior to assesment and so just a quick visual, guesstimated about $400 to $500. So just gotta cough up the insurance excess.

Ironically, my insurance excess on broken glass is zero. I wonder..... nah...... :)

Ashphalt.

I said, they break quite easily.

You said, they break easily.

I think the difference is considerable.

That's quite unlucky. I dropped mine on to concrete the other weekend, it jumped out of my pocket whilst I was running and then proceeded to slide down the hill beside me. The screen is absolutely fine just a few scratches on the back of it.

Absolutely.  It's nice the way the glass is just slightly proud - in terms of using it etc.  It's dissadvantage, as I've found out, is that it's easier for it to hit just on that edge (which is quite clearly where it's landed) - and we know what happens when you hit glass on the edge.  Well at least I do :(

nunasdream: You could also ask for an exchange to a different model say an 8X? I have done that with a faulty device before, they also gave me the difference back. I have found they're a bit more willing to do that than an outright refund.

Today I bought an iPhone and put it on a 12month deferred along with the $29.95 open contract - worse comes to worst I'll just ask Harvey Norman to give me a store credit or something. What makes the matter worse is I'm simultaneously being screwed around by Nokia and Lenovo (2 weeks wait and still a motherboard isn't in stock) - it does become very frustrating that such issues that should be resolved within hours are taking weeks.

Thanks for the feedback

This is really sad for me to hear that the performance of NZ retailer has forced your hand away from WP over to iOS

For my 2c I have been personally battling away with Apple online sales NZ getting them to replace or repair an iPad 2 which data SIM slot just stopped working after the 12 month warranty, for me this has been going on for 6 months

I'm about to take Apple NZ to small claims court to make them live up to their obligations under NZ Consumer Guarantees Act

I will win because of CGA I have no doubt about that

Yep, Gorilla glass breaks just as easily (probably more easily) as any other glass and I've never heard otherwise.  However it is very impervious to scratching, which while making it tough from a scratching point of view also makes it more brittle ( or more susceptible to breaking).

Caller ID match to contacts list still not working?

Sorry if this is a repeat question...

I got the impression that with the latest OS update for WP8 the caller ID issue that happens when you have your contacts with the +64 xxxx prefix was resolved.

Was I dreaming?

I think I have the latest OS (8.0.10211.204).

Thanks.

I'll send the settings in a minute...

Sounds like it was re flashed with an Australian ROM ?

If so that's expected it doesn't understand the unique things that NZ telcos do to their SMS-C i.e. they don't stamp a time zone on incoming domestic text messages

We can try to get yours updated through an over the air upgrade

Telecom will release their updated ROM over the air, turning on 4G soon

I just posted the extra settings screen...

What do you suggest I do?

Go back to the Telecom ROM now and wait for the OTA update from them?

Get a different update from Nokia Care using the flashing procedure?

BTW, the extra settings says apac_australia_new_zealand ...

Thanks again.
