I am having difficulty understanding what MS have done with WP8 and Telco Branding.

I would have thought Telco Branding would have been for options like 'Startup Screen Image',Default Proxy Settings,etc..

But it appears that they are using this to add country specific information - e.g. SMS-C, Telephone Number resolving (+64). If you dont use the Telecom branded image you have issues with at least the phone number resolving. This seems rediculous.

Lets assume you have come from AU to NZ for work, bringing your Lumia 920, you will have problems. This should not be the case. MS should be handling the country specific settings so when you move from country to country your phone continues to function correctly. Having them set by the carrier in their image is just wrong, we are in a jet-setting age, we travel, I travel and this is very annoying.

It seems too much was added to the branding.

Another example would be the Lumia 620 being sold in NZ. It is using an AU image, there is no NZ image, and it has trouble resolving phone numbers prefixed with +64. Again just wrong! MS should be handling the basics themselves. Let the carrier 'Brand' the phone with the firmware, NOT modify its basic functionality.

Its actually not the Windows Phone OS that is the problem here, its underneath that in the radio stack chipset firmware, which is bundled into the image, so when you flash an AU image you end up with the wrong radiostack for NZ

You're right Nokia has provided the correct radio stack image in the Telecom NZ image and not others

I am working on getting this fixed as an over the air update

One workaround until then is to save your contacts as +64xx and 0xx

I thought this was just an irritating quirk with Windows Phone after finding the issue on my Lumia 800 way back. Good to see there's some effort to get a fix in.

FYI anyone..
I flashed my 920 to the (correct for my phone) 059Q994 - 1232.5957.1308.0007 ROM discussed a page or two back in here, and today also grabbed the minor Nokia app updates, and voila.. the new storage tool is present, giving me the option to clear the temporary files. Of course, after wiping the phone I haven't got any yet, but nice to have anyway.

All very slick, and everything seems to be running fine; which it did with the previous rom as well, so I wasn't expecting any dramas.

Always nice to have the current software, so I'm real pleased the tools and roms are made available like this.

Read earlier today that this update is causing mobile data problems with AT&T LTE. Connections "stall" and no data traffic happens for a while, until Aeroplane mode is toggled OFF/ON...

Yeah I read that too before flashing but decided it wouldn't affect us here so I went ahead. So far so good.

I haven't noticed any of the other improvements yet, but I'll be watching it closely.

Thank you for trying to help us understand the problem. It would be great if you could clarify the situation that this leaves NZ Lumia phones and overseas Lumia phones in:

1) Lumia 920 with NZ image
Resolves phone numbers without having to add 0xxx and +64xxx numbers to each contact when in NZ

QUESTION: Can I expect this phone to work OVERSEAS?, i.e. when I travel I insert a local SIM into the my phone [much cheaper than roaming] - Will phone number resolution work still with local phone numbers or has this 'fix' broken things for us travelers.

2) Lumia 920 with AU/HK/... image
Will not resolve phone numbers correctly unless you add 0xxx and +64xxx numbers to each contact when in NZ

QUESTION: If the 'fixed' RadioStack that is applied to the NZ image will work in overseas markets [assumption, yet to be answered] then why isn't the 'fixed' radio stack just globally pushed?

3) QUESTION: Is MSFT going to do anything about allowing the WiFi to be used during a phone 'RESTORE'? Currently backing up to SkyDrive is a complete waste of time for me, because 2Degrees requires an APN of 'internet' and hence when I go to restore it cannot establish a 3G data connection because the APN is blank, and you cannot either (a) Enter in a correct APN or (b) Specify a WiFi to connect to. Basically as the saying goes a backup is only as good as your ability to restore, and in this case that is ZERO. So I must make a list of all applications installed, ensure photos/videos are sync'd, note any specific settings etc before RESTORING my phone - Not user friendly.

Opinion
I want this phone to succeed for MS, but these situations need to be resolved, 'end users' should not have to go through hoops like this, they rightly should expect these basic features to 'just work'. To me, saying the NZ is different doesn't help. MS have been in the NZ mobile market for years WinMo+ and they have managed to do phone number resolution, even on WP7 and WP7.8...

Basically I can take an iPhone from NZ and guess what it still works. When relatives visit from overseas their iPhones still work. WP8 should work in these situations also.

These problems are not limited to Nokia Lumia phones either, I note the 2Degrees Huawei Ascend W1 also has problems resolving phone numbers unless you put +64xx and 0xx formats against each contact. So this would appear to be an issue with the 'generic' radio stack.

I have kept this about end user, visible, basic functionality. To succeed in a market a phone does need to perform these basic functions, no end user is going to say 'yup, that's ok, just add that persons phone number twice', or don't worry that restore doesn't work, at least you can 'backup'!

I've been running this rom for a few says and so far have had no issue with data breaking so touchwood we might be okay

It depends how the problem needs to be resolved.

My earpiece was dead on one side and they forced me to send my Lumia 800 back with the headset, even though the phone was clearly not broken and I didn't even buy them together. I was 6 weeks without my phone and I ended up buying a second one before it came back because I desperately needed it. I was pretty mad about that!

Since then I've done all repairs myself (loose battery and the same headset problem again) and I won't send it in if I can avoid it. I'm currently considering replacing the camera to fix a soft spot.

If your problem can be fixed without waiting for parts from overseas then I'd expect it to be done pretty quick. Call them and they'll give you detailed packing instructions including the actual box it goes in (a CD box).

That was an exercise in frustration. The guy I got barely spoke English and couldn't understand me. I think he said i'll get an email about where to send the phone to. I had to laugh when he said it'll be a software setting smh.

This looks like it'll be fun!

Rumours are there's an update coming up that will bring double-tap the screen to wake the phone (like the Nokia N9) and permanent clock option.

Also it seems the radio problems with AT&T have been fixed and a new update is being deployed in the USA.

It would be nice if it was not just a permanent clock, but indicated if there were emails etc... In fact, I would rather that information were available without turning the screen on than a clock. Also looking forward to the double tap!

I cringe every time I see these kinds of post, knowing that we haven't even received the previous update yet:

Update released for Nokia Lumia 920, 820 and 620

We have released some new software updates for Nokia Lumia 920 and 820! Version 1232.5957.1308.00xx will bring:

improved automatic display brightness adjustment
fix for intermittent screen blanking during a call
further performance and stability improvements.
Additionally, we have published new software update for Nokia Lumia 620 version 1030.6407.1308.00xx, with plenty of reasons for you to update:
Improved touch screen functions, including corrections in multi-touch actions
Better voice quality with Bluetooth headsets that support echo/noise suppression
Enhanced camera performance with corrected exposure when flash is used in bright light conditions
Various improvements to system stability, performance, and usability
The update will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks, so please stay patient and wait for the notification to pop up on your phone screen once your phone is eligible. The exact software version may wary between different regions.

The Lumia 620 update has come through. It isn't available on the 920 because for some reason Telecom make it take a long time - the firmware is up on Nokia's server, so who knows why Telecom (I'm assuming that it's an issue with Telecom making it available) haven't made it available... I'm not desperate for this update, but I will be much keener to get the GDR 2 update with the permanent clock etc and I'm not going to be very excited about waiting for weeks or months...

My 620 got the update too, its an open market phone being sold by Noel Leemings not like the 920 with the Telecom image

i can tell you that we will be "encouraging" the operators to approve these updates faster than before
