Interesting development in the world of N95 mapping - there is a java program that lets you use the N95 as an external GPS unit for other devices (a laptop for example). A few people are working very hard to try and get this software to allow GPS programs like TomTom to recognise the N95 internal receiver as an external receiver, which would increase our choice of mapping software considerably.

I'm using gmapmaker to download some maps (I think I worked it out), but I'm finding all the little files its getting are chewing space on my memory card. So far I have 130mb of data downloaded but its using around 900mb of memory card space. Is there a way around this?

Yes there are heaps of posts about this on the www.mgmaps.com forum. Basically because the map files are small and the cluster size is by default 4k so the smallest amount of space used by a file is 4k even though the files are smaller than this. A solution is to reformat your microsd card to FAT32 from the default FAT, and choose a cluster size or 1k or even 512. You do this on your pc using Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management.
Of course reformatting will erase all data!

Also if you use the scripts (maptilecacher and maptilefe) you can adjust the default settings to store multiple map tiles per file which results in far fewer but larger files.

I think gmapmaker will support this as well soon.

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

Could you tell us how to go about getting the Garmin Mobile XT? I went to the Garmin website, selected Mobile XT but it only had European maps. A quick step by step guide would be great! I have been to the Project site and that part I can do:)

I reformatted my memory card using FAT32 and uses the smallest allocation setting, I've gone from 900mb lost to around 20mb which is a hell of a lot better. Downside was it look much longer to copy the files onto the memory card

Ahhh, just spent hours trying to get the Garmin XT to recognise my internal GPS on the N95.

Result 1: it loads, everything works except that it couldn't detect the internal GPS.
Result 1: splash screen / title page, then it closes.

Help! Or should I just go and buy a stand-alone GPS for NZ?

I'd suggest getting a proper GPS unit if you just want something that just "works". the N95 was really a waste of time and money unles you have man-hours to spend sorting out an 3rd party alternative.
Nokia promise lots and deliver very little. I'm still fiddling about with the E50 and other mapping options and if I find one that works i'll let you all know.

I'd upload the Gmaps cache but it seems that all those upload sites have piles of numerous catches. sombody find me a real host and i'll stick it up. Also I think MGMAPS might work on the Nokia 6275 CDMA which would be just great!

Well, I must admit the maps for other countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan, USA, etc are very well done and accurate. It is unfortunate NZ has got the short end of the stick.

It's a shame I cannot use my N95 to its full potential here in NZ.

On a slightly different note, but still related. Has anyone actually kep the "Asia Maps" application installed? It seems a complete waste of space for NZ considering it only has maps for a few Asian countries. Any reason why not to remove it?

Interesting. Mine was still installed after firwmware update. I did buy this phone off someone else, so perhaps he installed it on the memory card.

Start Mobile XT
Go to Settings
Go to System
Select "Remote GPS", simple.

I dont agree with comment below about needing hours of work etc, the N95 works extremely well running Mobile XT. After installing the (free) NZOP maps there are no data downloads to worry about and you get full voice navigation over the whole of New Zealand. The GPS unit in the N95, after the latest firmware update, is very fast to get a lock and hold it, comparable to units running the SIRFIII chip.
It is a job of a few minutes to install Mobile XT and the NZ map.
