I've found several posts with folks with similar problems, but none with these two particular pieces of equipment. Like others, I'm trying to connect to the internet using my phone (motorola V551) & iPAQ 2215 and am not able to do so. The two link up fine to transfer files, etc.

In setting it up like one of the descriptions here on GeekZone, all goes well until it asks for username & password. My carrier is Cingular & there's no information anywhere about what my username and password is (I'm sure it's not what I use to access my account on their website). Where does one get this information? And what number does one use to dial? I've seen, variously *99***1# , *99***3# and others.

I've talked to HP, Motorola, and Cingular & they ALL say they don't support this! Amazing! I know, I'm preaching to the choir!

Any help would be deeply appreciated. This why I bought this phone.

Randy

Thanks Keith--

Where did you get your username & password? Is it what you use to log onto your account at Cingular's website? Or did Product Support give you one? The people I talked to at the regular customer service number had no clue what to do or where I should go.

Folks, check this thread for Cingular GPRS settings for Pocket PC to see if it helps.

Mauricio -- I tried all the suggestions in that thread, but still get the message that the modem disconnected. The device pairs OK -- I can download files/pictures from the phone to the Pocket PC (2215) just fine. The issue is that something's not right with the modem part -- it disconnects immediately. Keep in mind I've got the V551, not the 600, as in the thread, but also there seems to be some dispute about the username and password.

It would be interesting to note if ANYONE has made this work with the V551 and 2215 (though I suspect the problem is with the v551).

I'm totally blown away that Cingular doesn't support this (i'm ranting, I know). This is like back in the late '80s when modems became common -- one had to sleuth out the codes oneself.

Is there any bluetooth phone out there that seems to work as promised? If so, I'll go back to Cingular next week & switch!!

I suggest you check with Cingular that you account has indeed a GPRS service associated to it.

And check the CSD configuration. Your phone may have the CSD in another slolt, so instead of *99***1# you have to use *99***2# (or whatever position the corect CSD).

I'll check with them this monring. However, I can access the net just fine on the phone. I do notice that the CSD info is listed on the # 1 field.

One interesting thing I've noted is that on my iPAQ, even though I've been entering in CINGULAR1 or the other string as the password (as per the several threads here), when I go back again to re-check or re-configure the connection, there are many more stars in the password field than what I've entered, indicating that the system has put another password in there.

Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?

Thanks for the info -- I had actually gotten most of that from Cingular's Level 2 support (after they told me they don't support this type of thing). However, the modem string you provided did have one difference -- the "IP" was capitalized -- the techie I talked to said everything was lower case. Obviously since it worked for you, I think your string is the correct one.

Anyway, i tried it & did get a message different from the 'Modem disconnected. Please check your settings' that I have always gotten. Instead the message was something like 'Could not connect for an unknown reason. Please check your settings...'. So this string performs differently -- I don't know if that's progress or not! :)

It's hard from me to believe that the model differences in our iPAQs is affecting this - we're probably using the same OS, and at any rate my intuition tells me this is a phone/network issue. But I'm not 100% on that. I don't think it would be regional either, as then one couldn't roam around the country accessing the net (which is one main reason most of us want this feature).

So, just to be clear, after you entered the information, you simply open your iPAQ's browser or email and connect?

Thanks for your help again!

Instead of &f&d2&c1+cgdcont=1,"IP","isp.cingular" try using

  • &f&d2&c1;+cgdcont=1,"IP","isp.cingular"
    or
  • Z;+cgdcont=1,"IP","isp.cingular"

    (note the ; added).

Wellll, here's an interesting development. Just for buggerall, I went back to the link you put earlier in the thread & retried those suggestions & THIS ONE WORKED:

    Enter # exactly as dialed: *99# [ asterisknineninepound ]
    Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    Password: CINGULAR1

    Extra dial-string: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

The one thing I did differently is that I noticed in mbdonald23's suggestion that one should uncheck 'wait for dialtone' -- this had not been mentioned in any previous thread that I saw. So I went back & tried the above one & IT WORKED!!! Amazing! So all seems to be happy for now.

I am, though, baffled that there would be so many logins, strings etc. for very similar devices (the one that worked for me was apparently for a v600, not v551), especially when Cingular has published a 'one size fits all' procedure.

So I guess I'll keep my unlimited data plan! :) It's interesting also that they aren't pushing this, since they'd certainly sell more unlimited data plans as well as attract more of us road warrior types to their service. But maybe they don't WANT more data on their network!?

Thanks to all for your help!

Good stuff. FYI, Z; is a reset and most newer Sony Ericsson model require this now. By default the CGDCONT string should always work but some new phones are getting too complicated...

Oops. Forgot to say that the number dialed is not *99#, but *99***1#, as given to me by Cingular (& also a number of others in this & similar threads).

    Thanks again!

Just wanted to let everyone know, i used rgreeniwa method and it works. I have a IPAQ H555 and the Motorola V551.

I did as follows and it works!

    Enter # exactly as dialed: *99# [ asterisknineninepound ]
    Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    Password: CINGULAR1

    Extra dial-string: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

i also made sure that "wait for dial tone before dialing" WAS checked.

what a pain in the @#!, but it works!

    thanks rgreeniwa!
