I need help. I just purchased the Moto V551 and swithced cell providers to Cingular. I want to use this phone as a modem for my Axim X30. Motorola's website and manual say it can be done by simply following the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) directions on the Pocket PC. I did that, now the phone and x30 can "see" each other, and I can exchange files, but when I try to make the x30 connect to my ISP through the phone, the phone immediately goes to the three tone error, but not message follows, and the x30 says "No modem at above number...etc". I don't think the phone ever really dialed.

Where do I go from here? Is there a certain service I need to subscribe to via Cingular? Is there something special I need to do to set up the dialer? I'm befuddled and over my head!

The devices should work ok, but you have to consider this:

  • Check with Cingular that your account does include GPRS access
  • Follow this guide
  • Connection string, user name and passwords for Cingular GPRS are on this thread

Let us know how it goes...

Is it possible to use my own ISP? Every post I read are talking about connecting to cingular with thier provided user name and passwords. I guess I may not understand.

    Thanks

Yes, it is possible to use your ISP - you'll have to contact Cingular to arrange for CSD to be used on your account. You'll be charged per minute, and the speed will be 9.6Kbps.

I also just got the Motorola V551 and have the Axim30 and Cingular Wireless service. It took me a while to get it to work, but I found out that you must make sure you are subscribed to GPRS as either PER USE or as one of the packages cingular offers. One thing to also watch is that the V551 will turn off the bluetooth after a short period of time if you choose the option to temporarily turn it on (this drove me crazy, because I was trying different things and then did not realize that the phone's bluetooth went off!). One other thing that was making this difficult was that if the X30 is currently connected to your WIFI (802.11b) connection, you will not be able to connect as a dialup to the V551 phone (although use can use the file transfer program). Just for reference, I have setup the X30 as follows:

    Goto Connections - (Add New)
    Type a name. ( e.g.,GPRS )
Then select: Modem Bluetooth Dialup Modem then (Next)
Enter the dialing no#: *99***1# (Next)
    Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (all upper case)
Password: CINGULAR1 (all upper case) goto (Advanced)
    Baud rate ( 115200 )
Check the box "Wait for dial tone" (I have not tried Uncheck, but others report this works too)

Add Extra dial-string modem commands as below:

Extra dial-string: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular" (upper and lower case as shown)

When the X30 connects to the GPRS network, you will see an indication on the V551 that GPRS is active
