Just got this email:

As a registered Windows Phone developer, you have been invited to participate in Windows Phone ‘Mango’ Beta 2 for WP Dev Devices Program on Microsoft Connect.
This program makes a pre-release build of Windows Phone ‘Mango’ available to our developers, allowing you to test your applications on ‘Mango’ and prepare it for the upcoming update. Together with the recently released Windows Phone SDK Beta 2, this pre-release OS build allows you to test your code on a personal, retail device.

Once you accept the invitation by clicking through the link below, you will be asked to complete a mandatory survey, which provides this pre-release program’s required terms and conditions (guidance, voiding of your phone’s warranty, country limitations, etc.) that you must accept prior to having access to the update tool.

Looks like it voids the phone's warranty, but a twitter post from MS suggested they would provide support for one Mango beta device. Might have to give it a go...

Anyone else here got a developer unlocked device and going to get the Mango beta?

You don't need an unlocked device, any retail one will do.

I wouldn't do it yet, as it's still very much beta and from what I understand many features are still MIA.

Yes any reatil device will do, but it does need to be developer unlocked and you need an active AppHub account for it to work. There are also other unofficial ways but I wouldn't touch them, for risk of it going wrong and having no offical MS support. Upgrading voids your warranty but MS provides support for one device. Zune does a backup before you upgrade as you need to go back to that before upgrading the to retail release of Mango.

I've been running Mango on my Trophy for just under a week, loving it so far but as you say there are a few things still missing, this is quite an early Mango build after all.

One nice thing for us NZ users....the Bing maps finally works properly without having to set it to US.

I recieved the invite on day 1 :-)

My device is officialy developer unlocked. Took about an hour over all and I had mango installed on my Windows Phone. Your official developer unlocked device along with the BETA invite in your email which you have recieved covers your device with warranty via Microsoft.

As Kyanar has mentioned above, there is a way to load mango now on even unofficial developer unlocked devices or even multiple official developer unlocked devices but if anything goes wrong with the hardware during flashing mango or later on while you are running the mango build, Microsoft will only cover one device out of their own pocket if you have the invite email, an official developer account.

ps - Mango is awesome. Scrolling is even more buttery smooth. Love the Windows live and facebook chat on the phone and Tellme voice recognition where the phone reads out chats and text messages is cool and you can reply to the message or call the person without even lifiting the handset. You can now take photos by touching on the screen so don't have to use the hardware button.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Im tempted to load mango on my Omnia 7. Mango does look like an awesome update. Any reason why i shouldn't you reckon? Im planning to get a Nokia WP7 when ever thats released anyways, or maybe whatever Samsungs Mango device is going to be. The only thing that puts me off is that i have read that you need to revert back to NoDo when you officially update to Mango. How easy would this be? Hopefully not too difficult haha

I know a few people with the mango update and they are all loving it. Range of different phones, mainly HTC and 1 with a focus. They said for a first update it really has improved the phone quite dramatically (my first question was does it now allow mp3 ringtones Laughing)

as long as you back up your data etc beforehand I wouldn't see why you wouldn't try the update.

I'm looking at getting an omnia in the next couple of weeks, and will load mango on it.

That's correct. When you load Mango, Zune takes a full backup of your phone (which you need to back up again to somehwere else, just in case). When it comes time to upgrade to the retail release of Mango, you'll have to use Zune to revert back to this backup, so you will lose everything you have added to the phone while its been running the Mango beta (TXTs, apps etc).

my first question was does it now allow mp3 ringtones

Yes it does. I believe if you set the Genre of an MP3 file to "ringtone" in its Meta data and then sync it to the phone, it will show up as an available ringtone. I haven't tried this yet so can't confirm.

Damn, Lucky buggers.

I'm no developer, and not so keen to haxx0r my phone.

The anticipation is killing me.

Does it fix the super slow GPS?

had a few friends do the hack to get Mango, and it seems to be fine. My biggest issue would be having to go back to the backup and then putting mango retail on later on.

yes you can because the purchase is tied to your windows live id and not the device itself.

Anyone got visual voicemail working? I'm wondering if it needs to be supported by your carrier?

Video of it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=b_8vkzMuDfQ

I don't get the "voicemail" pivot available, just the "history" page in the dialler section. Anyone else had luck this this?
