I'm dumping Gamepass after the subscription increase and I will have no need for Microsoft Store login after that. Can I easily keep/convert the existing Minecraft login to use with a standalone Minecraft install?

Apologies if this is a dumb question. I set up Store and purchased Gamepass ages ago with my account and I'm not the daily Minecraft user.

Minecraft is owned by MS, and uses their system to login. So you cant get away from them :)

Did you purchase Minecraft, or was it just part of your gamepass sub ? If the former, you should be fine to just log in.

Minecraft was part of the Gamepass sub and accessed through the Xbox PC App. I'm going to buy a Minecraft download from somewhere without a store to continue.

As above, if you have purchased Minecraft you can drop Gamepass but you still log in with whatever microsoft user/store you purchased Minecraft with.
If you have not purchased Minecraft and played it with your Gamepass subscription you will lose access to Minecraft, however you can buy it stand-alone.

OP advised only had it via Gamepass.
So yes, will need to buy it.

Still need to log in with Mircosoft account & Microsoft Store on PC.

Buy via the Mircosoft store or

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-java-bedrock-edition-pc?tabs=%7B%22details%22%3A0%7D

or you can buy from store but I think its only a digital code and you would still need to link to MS store account.

You can purchase as a gift, this will allow you to send the link for the recipient to register and redeem the title to their own Microsoft account.

Also you may want to check your Microsoft/Xbox account for Rewards points you may have some from gaming streaks that can go towards purchase of Minecraft Java from the Microsoft Store.

Looks like there's a documented option to purchase from minecraft.net without any store sign in required:

https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/6660924652557

Hopefully the cheaper options to purchase a download code go to the same place ams not the store. What might be the best service to buy a download code? I'll need both Java and Bedrock

The minecraft.net still requires you to log into your MS account to buy .

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-deluxe-collection-pc?tabs=%7B%22details%22%3A0%7D

You can redeem a minecraft code here

https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/redeem

BUT you still need to sign into your Mircosoft account.

TLDR

If you want to play Minecraft Java or Bedrock legally, you need to sign into a Microsoft account on PC, no matter where you buy it.

Make sure you buy it before you end your gamepass sub, that way you still get 20% off.

Wow, do this OP, Minecraft nearly NEVER goes on sale.
That game prints money and Mircosoft knows it!

i wouldn't trust greymarket with Minecraft codes, you can buy it via JB Hifi digitally etc but that 20% off is a steal.
